Newcastle University pull a web page and revoke email privileges of someone who posted their view of vegetarianism according to this story on The Register[^]. It wasn't inflamitory or deeply insulting. The arguments have been rescude from Google's cache http://www.hyperactive-stage.co.uk/blog/comments.asp?ref=196[^] The NU apparently backed this guy in the beginning, citing the Education Act. Then they decided that since he was a visiting fellow he wasn't covered and they could remove his access. This totally sucks! I urge people to get in contact with the nutter who suspended his access, University Registrar, Dr John Hogan[^] to let him know that this type of cencorship is unacceptable. This kind of censorship is only one step away from saying that digging up dead grandmothers is an acceptable way of protesting about animals rights.

Satire is the least appreciated form of expression and the most concise. Wait, I think I see a trend here...

I doubt he'll read it, but boy oh boy do I hate animal rights activists. Thanks to them, the pace of medical research has been reduced and people with multiple sclerosis or diabetes or AIDS or lupus continue to suffer because ridiculous amounts of research money is used to make sure the lab animals are fed and cared for better than most of our fellow human beings. - F

I just sent an email supporting the University's right to censor anything it damn well pleases. "You get that which you tolerate"

It would be fun to censor your emails to Newcastle University. :) -- 100% natural. No superstitious additives.

This isn't about the right of the university to "censor" who they want. Of course they can. The guy is not prohibited from re-publishing his views elsewhere. As such, it's not really censorship. IMO, the critical issue is about whether or not to continue the precedent of pandering to the lunatic fringe of "moral" vegetarians and animal rights activists, whose implied political weight (thanks to actions like this) suck money from medical research, and by extent, cost human lives. I expressed my displeasure that this would occur, but I certainly understand the position of the university in today's litigous society. - F -- modified at 18:19 Sunday 14th May, 2006 (No, you're not an idiot, but you're acting like one.)

Can't they just round up all the animal rights activists, and perform tests on them instead? Medical science would take giant leaps... ;) -- 100% natural. No superstitious additives.

Well, somebody has to! I think this is a complete non-issue. People fighting to promote their moral world view, whether vegetarians or Creationists or whoever, is a perfectly normal, natural and healthy component of any civilization. The fact that they are taking advantage of other, far more problematic aspects of that civilization - such as the exploitation of legal loopholes left conveniently there to be exploited - is a completely separate, unrelated issue. I agree that democracy by lawsuit is a dangerous development in our civilization, but I don't blame that problem on vegetarians. "You get that which you tolerate"

Dear Mr MacAngus, I fear that the coverage in the Register and elsewhere has been rather misleading. Mr Lloyd is not employed by this University, is not a visiting fellow and has not been a student here. He has done some work in the past with members of staff in one school. In short he is not a member of this University and has no entitlement to have his web pages hosted by the University. When we started receiving complaints about material on his web site that was hosted by the University it became clear that we were in breach of the JANET regulations. JANET is the academic network and we are required to follow these regulations. The relevant link is given below: http://www.ja.net/services/publications/policy/aup.html The regulations are clear that the JANET network can not be used to host material which is designed or likely to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety. The University is an educational charity. Its charitable purposes do not extend to hosting provocative websites merely for the sake of doing so. Mr Lloyd of course is perfectly entitled to his opinions and can place them on his own website. There is nothing cowardly or despicable about our action. Yours sincerely, John Hogan ********************************* Dr John Hogan Registrar University of Newcastle upon Tyne
