The discussion board software

I have been a member since this site was young. When I joined, the discussion board software was primitive. I have visited this site a few times since then. I am still frustrated by the way that the discussion board works. It is not primitive but it is different from other forums. I have in the past attempted to convert from the CodeGuru forums to here but the way that the discussion boards here work has prevented me from adjusting to this site. I am the first CodeGuru member to get 10,000 posts, and more than 95% (my estimate) were attempts to help others, not attempts to get help for myself. I don't know if that is relevant; if you say I am just bragging then it is not relevant. I am not sure what the point is of what I am saying except I hope my comments are useful. I am not sure what it is about the discussion boards here that is frustrating, but one thing that is frustrating is that I can't get a thread to be shown on a page and just the thread. Showing a thread on a page is the way that most other forums work; all others that I can think of.

No, I did not. I never got that far. In the past I have always given up before finding that. I expected something like that to be available as a "View". In CodeGuru, I would open many threads in separate browser windows. I can do that if I shift-click on the "View Thread" link. That will be very useful. Perhaps I can adjust to the other peculiarities.

I personally love the message view. I can't stand going to other phpBB-style boards when I keep having to click a thread, click back, click another thread, click back, ad nauseum. The thread titles here tend to be a lot shorter (and not as informative) as other boards, so it's great that I can take a quick look at the first post in a thread, then move on, without having to wait for multiple page loads.

I personally love the message view. I can't stand going to other phpBB-style boards when I keep having to click a thread, click back, click another thread, click back, ad nauseum. The thread titles here tend to be a lot shorter (and not as informative) as other boards, so it's great that I can take a quick look at the first post in a thread, then move on, without having to wait for multiple page loads.

It is somewhat a matter of personal preference and such. In the other forums (in particular the one I mentioned previously) I would go through the list of threads with the subjects and I would shift-click the ones I wanted to look at, so I would have a queue in the form of multiple browser windows. My wait time would be minimal since I could return to the list of threads while a browser window with a specific thread is opening. I forget what view it is but I think the topic view is most like the other forums. If it were to be combined with the View Link capability then that would probably be useful. In other words, if there were a list of threads that shows the subject and the other header data and if clicking a thread opened the thread in a page by itself then that would be useful. It would be useful to have the thread opened in a page devoted to the thread. When I said "personal preference" I was refering to the forum software, not the forums. The forums are people and policies. I have plenty of comments about the CodeGuru people and policies but that is a separate subject from forum software, especially since the people and policies are such a big topic.
