Sadly EDI is going to be with us for a LOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNG time. I currently work with an EDI system, and I absolutely detest it - I'm sure back in the 70's it was the Sine Quo Non, but nowadays it just looks and feels like an antiquated bodge, and XML is a significantly better platform - for a start you can use the same format of data whilst working in your application, when you send that data and when the receiver receives that data! The reason why EDI will be with us for a long time yet is because lots of very large business have a huge investment in the technology, and it works for them. This is very significant, as if it ain't broke, most companies aren't going to see the need to replace it. However, I would think few new applications implement edi, and it would definitely be worth your while learning how to map edi to xml and how to manage that transition for when the revolution comes :D
