Damn fucking CD burner

Yesterday I bought a new Benq 20X CD Burner. First two CD write attempts failed. 2 CDs lost. Then luckily James Johnson gave me those tips about DMA and I managed to write one CD. From 7 other attempts [I bought only 10 CDRs] 5 more failed, 2 were successful. Means 30% success rate. Blasted sick stupid mother fucking CD burner!!!!!!! I am taking the damn prick bastard back tomorrow and getting some other brand CD writer. Imagine this happening to me!!! Why me??????? Every single fucking time!!!!!!!!!!! It's gotta happen to me!!!!!!! 1.1 Billion people in India and yet I am chosen out for all these special happenings!!!!!!!! Crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :mad: :mad: :mad:

I don't thinkit's unreasonable for the burner's manufacturer to assume that the person using the device is at least smarter than a bag of hammers. 1) Check to make sure the CD's you're buring are capable of being recorded at 20x (a lot of the cheapest ones ARE NOT). 2) It might be that you've experienced ACPI hell. All of your devices (or at least the majority of them) are asigned the same IRQ. If you're buring from one IDE device to another IDE device, this could present a problem. 3) It could be that your CD writer software is crap, but I don't think this is the problem. Nish, give me your sys specs and at what speed you are writing. What is the error you are getting? Is it a buffer underrun? Are you sure the computer has the bandwidth needed to burn at those speeds? Depending on circumstances, burn protection may not be enough. And, most importantly, please tell me you're not using Roxio's Easy CD Creator! Jeremy L. I have connected the CD writer as primary slave. The CD writer is a Benq 20X Write/10 X ReWrite 40X Read drive. http://www.benq.com The 10 CDRs [of which 7 now occupy the waste basket] were Acer CDRs [the cover says 1X~24X] On two occasions the entire burn process finished, I got an okay message, the CD ejected, but I could not read from them. The drives [the burner and my old CD drive[ refused to even recognize them as CDs. Nish

Not so fast grass-hopper, if the 10 CD's were in a single package there is an excellent chance that they were made in the same batch, probably even consecutively. I once bought a 25 pack of cheap generic CD's that were all junk.

Well, because of the rotten Indian economy [assuming that it even qualifies as an economy] I am usually quite hard up for extra cash at most times. I had been saving for 5 months for this CD Writer. I had to choose between a 17 inch monitor or a CD Writer and I chose the writer. My HDD is only 16 GB and I badly needed to free some extra space. Thats what I bought the burner for. And after 150 days of anticipation, when it does this to me, it's not exactly a pleasant feeling. In fact yesterday night I was so upset that I didn't even participate in the battle between CG vs Marvanski. They both seemed to be talking about US americans or something similar. It would have been child's play for me to deviate them both from that topic to some other more relaxing topic like a comparison of the size of women's tits across the world. But I failed to do my duty as Lounge moderator. To be frank I feel slightly better now after posting this stuff here :-) Nish

John Simmons made some good points below... Try a CD at 1x or 2x. It may take a while (go read a book :)) but it'll give you an idea. Also, if you can "easily" see through the CDR, chances are it's cheap quality. Just remember if you disable ACPI to remove all PCI devices except the video card before you do so. You may have gotten [:p] a bad batch of disks, but I'd suggest ditching the Acer CDRs, I haven't used that brand myself, but I know a couple of other people who have had similar experiences with the Acer brand. Just a list of typical ?s... How much RAM do you have? How many programs are open? How fast is the computer? How clean is the filesystem? What kind of HDD are we talking about? 20x is almost a 3mb a second transfer. Chances are the computer isn't keeping up with the burn process. When a CDR is burned, the data used comes from a buffer in memory that's continually updated. If that buffer doesn't get updated quick enough it runs out, and you get this error. Jeremy L. Well, you got the system. See if you can find updates for your IDE controller and burner. Also, defrag your filesystem because a fragmented FS can slow access big time. And, don't buy Acer CDRs (this may actually be the cause). :) I used to have an Acer CD-RW drive and it wouldn't burn 99% of the CDRs I stuck in it.
