I won't post this in the soapbox, because I'd like some answers or explanations because sometimes, I really hate windows ( the OS )... Who's in charge of drawing the icons in the "QuickLaunch" toolbar and the system tray ?!!?!? I'm pretty sure that, in the sys-tray, it's the applications, but why, oh why, depending on the day, I have different icons for the same applications, or why on some days, the keyboard language is there, but on some days it's not ?!!?! ( I have to uncheck/apply/check/apply the "display in sys-tray" in the input local thingy ... I'm using norton/symantec anti-virus, and somedays, it shows a small computer as the icon, and some other days, it shows a "green icons" that when you move your mouse over, will open another icon, just on top of the sys-tray ( with the "computer" icon ) also, now I have 2 windows media player icon in the "quicklaunch" toolbar, one, is really the wMP, the other is for outlook ... Why ?!?!?!? but not always, other times, it's some other icons mixed up with some other apps ?!?! Thanks... Max. and why, when logging in, there's 3, count them, 3 msn icons .!?!?!?!?!

I am running NT sp5, and I get intermittent icon problems all the time. Explorer folder icons etc, all my shortcuts on the desktop etc. It just seems to be an instability in that area of windows. It doesnt seem to stop anything from working properly, just hard to find/recognise. Sorry cannot offer any solutions Roger Allen Sonork 100.10016 If I had a quote, it would be a very good one.

FWIW, I think the windows paradigm has grown far too dynamic for its own good. Too much graphic chaos all the way around. The logic to control all the flashy gizmos just adds unnecessary complexity to an application and when all that flash is competing for screen space with all the other apps it looses its significance anyway. Yeah sure, like I know what the hell all those icons on my system tray represent even when they are stable! I have never used XP, I just wonder if things there have grown better or worse. u possibly have a virus on ur pc. i dont remember the name of the virus....but it is one of those W32 series.. once ur computer is infected, this virus attacks the exe files and creates their copies.... u may check ur task manager to see what r the applications running... see if it has created any applications with unknown names... and norton antivirus shud do the cleaning...(make sure u have the latest updates) Acer

Reboot. If that doesn't clear it up, format the disk and reinstall Windows. Come to think of it, that is a general solution for pretty much *all* Windows problems. :-D No generalization is 100% true. Not even this one.

I've been running XP (on a Sony Vaio Duron laptop) for about a week now, and so far the only thing that's even come close to threatening it is Norton Antivirus (2002 Pro, no less) which had a fight with ZoneAlarm and tried to stop the machine booting even after I'd uninstalled it... Other than that, so far it's been rock solid as a dev machine - no blue screens, no unexpected exceptions, nothing...so far I'm actually seeing greater stability than Win2k, which is heartening :) Andy Metcalfe - Sonardyne International Ltd
