"You now are in the Bronx. A black Van holds before them. Three Afroamericans step out and insult their nut/mother on the roughest." The radio operator loughting audibly. The superior continues: "Before each fire burst I want to hear a loud "Motherfucker"." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGY11XvRZcE[^] hahaha ;D :~ In local media this is presented as racism in German army. On youtube it's marked as comedy.

I'm pretty sure I would not like to live in a world in which I would never be offended. I am absolutely certain I don't want to live in a world in which you would never be offended. Dave

Radioman (Funker), you are now guarding an airfield. Terrorist try to hijack your plane. Two controlled bursts. Take action. (Short conversation about where to hold the MG) Take action. *fires* Well done, Radioman, the terrorists are dead. Radioman, now, you are in the Bronx. A black van stops in front of you. Three african-american males exit the car and insult your mother. Three controlled bursts. I want to hear a loud and clear "motherf*" before every burst. Take action. *fires and laughs* If the trainer had just refrained from describing the insulting party by their complexion, that would be normal military training.

Cheers, Sebastian -- Ceterum censeo, borlandem esse delendam.

A reflection of the sad state of Western civilization and its ability to defend itself. The German army pictured with its soldiers with human skulls[^], videos posted with institutional racism. The British Navy humiliated while its sailors are siezed and "confess" on international media, then return home to sell their stories to the tabloids. So much for a stiff uppper lip and bravery, England's highly regarded military has become a joke, for sale to the highest (tabloid) bidder. And we won't even mention Abu Graib.....

It's a shame noone bothers to think. They were massively outgunned by the Revolutionary Guard and there were rules of engagement to cover this scenario. Yes, they could have triggered a slaughter but the point of this method was to get a political solution. This has highlighted Iran's approach including more reports about them supplying high tech weapons to insurgents.

          The tigress is here :-D

They were approached by several small boats while the frigate they had come from sat nearby. The Iranian boats carry bow mounted machine guns, the frigate the HMS Cornwall carries considerably more firepower. If the commander had wanted to retrieve his sailors he could have. Surely you don't consider this either a political or a propaganda victory? Your sailors being paraded in front of the cameras to confess, then being returned to your country as a "gift" from the Iranian people, in time for their interview with the British tabloids..... not one of the finer moments for the British military.

It seems to be some kind of tradition in the Armies. Scalping[^]is not new... also I remember seeing pictures of British soldiers in Falkland posing with in front of them a pile of argentine heads. For some french colonial troops during WW1 and WW2? there was a tradition to cut the ears of the killed enemies, the action was called "couper cabèche". Mutilation of Japanese bodies by U.S. soldiers was common[^] So I don't get why you mention this as a proof of decay?

I would say its more fair to point to the British situation (and Abu Graib) as being the real problems. Scalping people is something I would expect more from the people we are confronting in Iraq and Afghanistan, than a more modern Western military force. As for the German army training situation, I have more of a sense of amusement at the media's reaction. War sucks period, practicing for it doesn't generally involve being politically correct or polite. Overall, I'm appalled at the sense of brutality and cowardice shown by what should be professional military forces.

Agreed for the cowardice, I disagree for the brutality: I expect soldiers to be brutal, to be able to plant their bayonet into the belly of their enemy, decapitate him with their shovel or tear his throat off with their teeth if necessary. These guys are not boy-scouts.

I expect the same when there is a fight, there should be no quarter asked or given, but when the fight is over, its over. The execution or torture of detained people is wrong. By the same token I don't believe it is right to desecrate the bodies of your opponent. You might be able to make a case for the idea that throwing a dead pig into fallen Islamic combatant might make his compatriots reconsider their place in heaven, but I don't see any lasting benefit.

Agreed. That's why it is not the job of soldiers to detain prisoners.

I don't believe it's right too, but war is not right either.
