Oracle version numbers

Hello everyone, A collegue of mine asked me if the oracle version number has something to do with the hardware platform? Because the newest versions are for Linux only, not windows? Is this true? If you have a reference to a good information source about oracle, always welcome! Thanks!

A colleague of mine used to work on Oracle. May be I will ask him and let you know, so that you could in turn inform your colleague regarding the same. It is so nice of you to be concerned about your colleague. :)

As a user of Oracle since version 6, I'm not aware of anything that ties a version number to a particular hardware/software platform. Likely the reason that the newer versions are only available for Linux, is because the Windows and other platforms versions are just not ready yet. After the Linux people have reported all the bugs and Oracle has corrected them, I'm sure you'll see a similarly named version of Oracle appear for Windows, Solaris, etc.. :)

For some reason Oracle have decided that Linux is their platform of choice, so they seem to focus on Linux first when releasing new versions. The Windows releases are just a bit behind. I'm not aware of any Oracle releases that are only for Linsux.
