Why should they apologize to the mafia for not following through with the contract? Or maybe you mean the apologies to the Cuban people for not setting them free?

I apologize for the lack of success.

Mike The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.

For me, this is not news at all. The CIA did this kind of stuff extensively in Latin America, Southern Asia, Middle East and Africa all through the 20th century: teaching torture to local police, supporting fascist dictatorships and death squads, ousting democratic governments just because they were not friendly, etc. The examples are many: the military juntas in Brazil and Argentina, the Pinochet coup against Allende in Chile, the contras in Nicaragua, the civil war in El Salvador, the Mossadegh ousting and support for Reza Pahlavi in Iran, etc. This is why I find it laughable that some americans claim any higher moral ground of the US foreign police over the islamofascists. Guantanamo and Abu-Ghraib didn't surprise me.

I agree it's not news, but there are on many these forums who reside where this news might not be transmitted (the USA for example) and it's good to educate people  There's no reason to think the leopard has changed its spots.

You mean where it's not filtered and rehashed to promote the Marxist agenda? Sure it is. That's what the New York Times is for.

So you see using a mafia hitman to solve a political situation not to your liking acceptable do you? Well I suppose if it's OK to do the same to your presidents, you must.

That Latin American countries are inherently unstable (just look at Venezuela...Was there "CIA involvement" there?) because you lack the caliber of people to generate a useful society? Well, good. Acceptance is the first step.

Nothing new, or old here. The CIA tried to overthrow Chavez in Venezuela a few years back.

If you lot wouldn't whinge every time they (the US) wanted to do things overtly, ie send the army in, (anywhere) they wouldn't have to resort to covert methods. And if you Yanks weren't so goddam whimpish in the face of such toothless opposition we'd all be better off. Saddam Hussein would have been finished off in 1990 if you'd stuck to your guns.... (literally!) Say what you like about the US, there are two things I know which cancel out any negatives: they are still the free-est nation on Earth, and never mind what claptrap you read in the papers, you go anywhere in the poorest parts of the world and EVERYONE (apart from a few religious nuts) aspires to what the US is. And remember this fact too: unlike just about every other nation in history, the US got where she is solely by the grace of her own hard work, and did it all in 200 years. (Yes, a few slaves helped, but you might remember that us nasty white Westerners are again just about the only peoples in history to ever voluntarily abolish slavery.) If the US needs to apologise for being who they are, then the rest of us shuold just drop dead of shame. Fred
