Networks, two computers, one running Win98, other W2K. Supposed to be easy, Colin and Shog both tried to help me, but I haven't got a clue what to do. It's easy they say, use ICS they say, use NetBEUI they say. Well FiretrUCK if I can get it to work. I have tried so many different things my head is starting to spin. I even managed to disable my internet connection and had to reset that. The problem seems to be with the Win98 machine, but I do not know for sure. Oh well, I guess I am going to have to pay a professional to get this going for me. --- CPUA 0x5041 Sonork 100.11743 Chicken Little Within you lies the power for good - Use it!

Tell me more about your setup, PJ. For a start, NetBEUI isn't routable. For another, ICS requires that the Internet host have a local NIC configured for 192.168.0.1 as an IP address. Other PCs on the network are supposed to automatically obtain their IP addresses from the ICS host, as it acts as a DHCP server, and handles NAT for the LAN. It's very limited, but it works well for small networks... "What is it?" and he said, "I don't know. Let's kill it." - Ed Gadziemski

:( Sorry to hear you're still having trouble PJ; Roger's post explains the process pretty well, you need to have one machine (98 in your case) configured to provide DHCP services and as a gateway to the Internet: this should be taken care of automatically by enabling ICS. The other machine (Win2k in your case) needs to know it's own IP address, name server(s), domain, and gateway; these should be set to be obtained automatically so that the DHCP server on the first machine can set them when you reboot. Note: With Win98, pretty much any change to network settings will require a reboot. So you'll be rebooting a *lot*. With Win2K, changes will either apply gracefully by themselves immediately after you click OK, or (as in the case of some DHCP changes) you can force them to refresh by certain ipconfig parameters. Quick glossary: IP address - unique identifier for a machine on a given network. For your own local networks, you use any address beginning with 192.168. TCP/IP - protocal that you want to use for your local network. It requires each machine to have a unique IP address, which in your case will be allocated somewhere in 192.168.x.x NetBEUI - Some Microsoft thing relating to NetBIOS. I honestly don't know much about this, but i don't think it's required in your case. ICS - Internet Connection Sharing. Microsoft's term for a group of services allowing one machine with an Internet connection to share access with other machines on a local network. Works very smoothly on Win2K and up, pretty flakey on Win98/WinME. If you want to give it another go tonight, pop on Sonork & i'll try a better explanation. :) ---Shog9---_**

Hey! That's what some of us do for a living. Though, in my case, I've been doing rather well cleaning up after the local "professional" types have done their damage:) "What is it?" and he said, "I don't know. Let's kill it." - Ed Gadziemski

Guys, I just want to say thanks for the help so far, I appreciate it.
