Rioting Students
-
[not intended as a racial post] A bunch of students in a province of South Africa have been rioting in their university and have caused a total of R4m (+-$400K) worth of damage. The reason? Because the university wanted to reduce the amount of money their were going to pay out for a students party from R300K to R30K due to financial problems. Now, this isn't out of the ordinary for South African universities, unfortunately. When I was at technikon (like a college) in Durban in 1996, some students rioted and vandalised the computer center (destroying parts of it). Don't know what the reason was. Must have been a good one. X| The latest that I heard this morning is that the students have reduced their monetary demand to a meager R200K and have vowed to "fight 'till the end" to get it. Guys, WTF? This only serves to make us look crap in the international eye. And this after all the good press we got when Mark Shuttleworth went into space. Nice going chaps. I am actually less worried about international opinion and more worried about how this kind of stupidity further widens the white/black gap. It just makes us whities say "stupid blacks" more and the blacks say "you are repressing us all over again" more. Really idiotic stuff. My favourite varsity related riot was when the Natal varsity rioted because they declared "pass one, pass all", meaning that if one person passed a class then everyone should be passed. I cannot see the logic, and if they can they should either be in theoretical physics, or picking up trash because it is either incredibly brilliant, or incredibly daft. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love, and to be loved in return - Moulin Rouge Tim Smith wrote: Over here in the third world of humor (a.k.a. Student riots are common here, but most of them are for reducing the university price... uni is too expensive here... I wonder how long it will be before schools in the US are that way. My sister had her grade raised from failing to passing because "it would hurt her self-esteem" to fail. It hurt her more when she had to be sent back because she couldn't do anything in the next grade. James Simplicity Rules!

Do teachers and administrators have to take special classes to become that stupid, or are only the very stupid attracted to the field. My brother's second grade teacher sent him home with no report card because she thought it would make him feel bad to see so many Ds and Fs. Imagine being 8 years old, walking home from school with all your friends, and the only one in the whole school who didn't get a report card  Ignorant bitch! I think the big problem is you get all these people who get into teaching because they want to help kids, but don't realize how badly they can (*checks to see if this is the SoapBox*) fuck some of these kids up with their stupidity. Teach the children that poor grades are a BAD thing, maybe they'll work harder next time. Teach the children that it is wrong to talk back to adults. Teach them that it is wrong to cuss 'like a sailor'. No more of this "we'll hold your penis for you while you take a leak" crap. The more the teachers do that, the further the children have to go to learn that life is hard; but rewarding if you work hard enough. In the latest class to graduate from the highschool I graduated from; 30 kids dropped out between the time they were freshmen to graduation. 30! Makes you wonder how many of them dropped out because they expected to be passed on like everyone else. 30 more people you and I are probably going to be supporting for the next 50 years because some idiot teacher didn't teach them that life will be hard and they need to work.
