I have windows update set to download and install on auto. Now, usually when windows needs to restart, a little dialog box pops up with "restart now" and "postpone" ( with a time option ) buttons. Only today, it popped up with an extra item. A status bar couting down from 4 minutes! The last thing I need is for this to get triggered while I'm asleep, so I want to remove the update from which it came. Any ideas which one?

Not sure, but IIRC this is default behavior with vista if you ignore it long enough. Since my postpone routine always involves dragging the popup off the edge of the monitor until I want to reboot I never saw the timer. I ended up turning off auto and just waiting until I wanted to reboot before letting WU do it's thing.

That's strange, I've been using vista for about 8 months now and never saw that timer. I have that annoying popup at least 4/5 times a week. I wonder if there is a way to disable it completely.

I was hit by the forced reboot thing once several months ago, so if it was an update it wasn't a recent one. I normally reboot shortly after installing the patches and very rarely wait the several days that are necessary to trigger the forced restart so not seeing it in the first two of the 6ish months I've had my laptop doesn't mean anything definitive either way.

You've kinda lost me there. From what I have seen, as soon as it's finished downloading and installing you are prompted to restart. A Dialog box pop's up in the lower right of the screen prompting you to restart or postpone, giving you an option of 10 minutes and 1 or 4 hours. Like I say, this occurs directly after the updates have been installed. Up until last month I found that if you ignored the pop-up, it would remain there regardless of the time. But I guess an update was released to fix that, or I changed a setting somewhere. Another change I noticed, after postponing ( I usually select 4 hours ) and then clicking on the icon in the sys tray, it pops up again with 10 minutes selected. I lost 4000 lines of work once since the darned thing counted down while I was cooking. But like I say today was the first time to notice the timer and especially the progress bar.

I'm referring to the behavior you're complaining about which rams the reboot down your throat whether you want it or not after several days of ignoring the reboot reminder.

My laptop did a forced reboot on me after ignoring it for several days about 4 months ago. It's not a recent change even if you hadn't ignored it long enough to set it off until more recently.
