If Vista does not start with the aero theme then the most likely problem is that your graphics card may not be up to it. What Windows Experience Index do you get for your graphics card on Vista ?

Thank you very much for your comment. I will check my vga card to find the solution.

Either you don't have WDDM drivers installed for your video card, or the card doesn't have the features necessary to run Aero.

i had problems with drivers that weren't up to the job. Make sure you have the latest Vista Aware drivers for your video card. I ran Aero for a few days but eventually decided that i preferred using my hardware acceleration to improve the speed of my machine rather than to drive some eyecandy. It's a nice idea though and in a couple of years when the hardware is powerful enough to run some software as well as the OS I'll probably go back to it (If I haven't gone to Beryl instead)

Problem with removing Aero is that I believe that Vista will run faster with it due to the hardware acceleration compared to a non-aero interface.

This is dependent on the gfx hardware you're using, areo will run on hardware weak enough to be slower than 2d, but I've never seen any written information about what the break even point actually is.

surely it will still be using hardware acceleration even if aero is not turned on. I assumed that what the system was saying was: You do not have enough acceleration available to run Aero so we are running a more efficient interface.

You may be right but I'm pretty sure that I read it somewhere, typically though I can't remember where and a quick google was not much help. regards,

Somehow something seems wrong if you turn off the bloat and your machine runs slower. What would happen if you ran your machine without a video card? I guess from an MS perspective though it will make people move down the hardware acceleration path and allow them to do more eye candy with the next variant of Windows. I'll try to find out what the situation is later. Russell

Good modern gfx cards are much faster in 3d mode than in 2d. As a result they're able to run areo faster than the 2d legacy gfx. Low end (generally integrated) gfx systems have minimal 3d support and consequently run areo (or beryl) poorly if at all.
