decides his/her audio program is going to implement volume control by changing my SYSTEM volume is going to find my mouse flying at their skull! Don't these people realize that when I want to turn down the volume I'm generally doing it so I can hear something else; and yes that something else may very well be the computer itself! Back to Winamp! James

:-D This is the first time I had commited to a different MP3 player [FreeAmp], I'd simply outgrown winamp with it lacking a music collection tool. Simply way too many MP3s for me to sort through all the time. But since it doesn't want to quiet down without doing it to the whole system its back to winamp for me. James

I've gone to using FreeAmp occasionally when i need to adjust information for a lot of new MP3s, as its playlist capabilities are excellent. AFAIK, the source is available for download; you could submit a patch... :) --------

My SB Live has a diagnostic tool, I figured I'd run it and see what it could do. Big mistake!! It figured it would be a great idea to turn *every* volume control to max and then play back a sample. Any louder and I would have had to pry the speaker cones from the wall behind me. I also have another app that samples audio from the line-in, it always set the volume to max, and I always set it back to a more acceptable level. (too high, and it clips) Stupid programmers!! Bruce Duncan CP#9088, CPUA 0xA1EE, Sonork 100.10030

Are you using Windows XP? Windows Media Player 8 is excellent IMO and its volume control is independent of the system one. It has a reasonably good media library and pulls information straight out of MP3s, as well as now being able to modify the MP3 files with new data you input. All in all I much prefer it to WinAmp, I couldn't envision a worse UI if I tried than WinAmp - I can't even see most of the controls. -- Andrew.

It's a matter of personal taste I guess. To be fair, I haven't tried WinAmp for ages so I guess I ought to try the new versions. -- Andrew.
