Hi, I want to convert different character encodings like koi8-r to ASCII. Where can I find information about them? I can see there are many charsets - utf-8, windows-1251 etc.

You can't convert kio8-r to ASCII. The former covers Cyrillic alphabet, and the later Latin (the English subset of Latin, really). What exactly do you want to do?

I want to parse a MIME message and the subject is encoded in kio8-r. I can't read the cyrillic letters of the subject. Maybe ASCII is not the format I need, maybe it should be Windows-1251.

If you want to preserve the cyrillic text, I suggest converting it to some form of Unicode. If you don't know much about it, maybe you can start by reading The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!) [^]
