The list of compatible development tools: For early versions of Windows CE, there were plugins to MSVC 5.0 and 6.0. However, these reportedly screwed up your environment so you couldn't use it for desktop development any more. In 2000 Microsoft released eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0, which includes eVC 3.0, which is basically a rebadged VC 6.0 environment that can live side-by-side. This is compatible with Windows CE 2.x and 3.0, including Pocket PC 2000 and 2002. Windows CE (.NET) 4.x changed some debugging interfaces and so a new version of eVC was required, version 4.0. eVB was dropped. CE 4.1 requires at least SP1, CE 4.2 at least SP2. SP2 was not compatible with CE 4.1, a problem corrected in SP3. SP4 adds support for CE 5.0. In terms of Windows Mobile versions, WM 2003 for Pocket PC and Smartphone are supported but Windows Mobile 5.0 is not. Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6 require Visual Studio 2005, at least Standard Edition. The free Express Edition is not enough. VS 2005 also supports Windows CE 5.0 platforms and Pocket PC 2003. I believe the support matrix is the same for Visual Studio 2008. eVC 3.0 and 4.0 do not work on Windows Vista. No fix is planned. If you're running Windows Vista you'll have to run a Windows XP virtual machine if you need eVC. See this page[^] for more, including the recommended installation order.
