Letting go of love

I got a new monitor very recently (LCD), and that makes my old one (CRT) ..... well old. So I decided to sell it off. Today I got this call from the buyer that he'll come around in the evening to pick it up, and now that I'm cleaning the thing up to make it look nice, I'm not feeling so good about this. Some of you might find it ridiculous that I'm attached to a material thing like a computer display, but you know, it's kinda hurting to let go of it. I've been with it for 5 years, and have evolved from a pacman playing noob to a good programmer (and a killer HalfLife veteran). It's withstood all the torture I've inflicted on it for ages, and has never let me down. But I'm confused as well. I'm presently using my new LCD monitor, and I don't plan to go dual, ever. So the old one has now been in a corner for a while, looking dead. And I know it's going to be like that forever, i.e. if I don't sell it off. So, on one hand, my practical self tells me to let go of it and let it get used, become functioning again and not turn into a piece of disposable junk, but then again, the emotional side makes it difficult to let go of it. I myself find it amusing (and painful) to be attached to material things this way, but I'm not attached to everything. E.g., I didn't think twice before selling off my iPod Touch and Zune on the same day, and that applies to many other items. Heaven only knows why I'm so emo about my PC stuff. :sigh:

No no, I meant the new 24" one. It's a 30-inch Dell. I had to buy a friggin graphics card for it, otherwise it wouldn't go upto 2560x1600 I was told....... And now I'm getting used to this insane desktop.......I downloaded three hi-res wallpapers.......and my icons look too small....lol. ;P

Er... I'm worse than you! :-O I agree this is very silly but I do keep a lot of useless junk in my garage: an MSX system, a bunch of 5 1/4" floppies, my first 2400 bps modem,... You can say that's stupid but,... ok I admit: it is stupid. :sigh:

I don't think I'd be that bad over a monitor...although I did have a nightmare recently, where I was driving a Yugo or something instead of my current car[^]...I can remember I was thinking 'why did I do it!!!'. When I woke up, it took me a while to reassure myself it was just a dream...

I still can't bring myself to throw some of those away... Like Flight Simulator 1.0, King's Quest I & Prince of Persia 1.0. I'm sure mine are unreadable, and I doubt I'll ever see a 5.25" drive again outside of a museum. But still...

like the fact that their 3.5" floppies were formatted at 1.7mb instead of 1.44 to foil casual copying attempts?
Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull

Atari 800xl, with hundreds of games 2 disk drives, paperclip word processor, 1200 buad modem... I will keep just one more year then... (been saying that since the 80's)

Heh well if you want to go there, then there's the wonderful books by Peter Norton about the internals of DOS with which you could learn how to do stuff like that yourself! It was such a fun, innocent time....now I'm just a Windows/.NET b*tch LOL
