updating problem in gridview

hello i m updating the user's detail through gridview...everything is allrite..but i make my email-id field unique...so i want to validate the mail-textbox of gridview to check whether mail-id already exists or not..if yes den der should be an alert that mail-id already exists...plesae help me how can i do dat....

Just write a query to run when they update the id that checks if it already exists in the database and if it does show a label which displays error message Why would they be able to update this field though?If its unique why dont you disable it
