Hey guys, I've been seeing a lot of talk about new phones that are a mix of a PDA and a cell phone. Just wondering if anyone has one, or knows of any cool ones coming out, and what sort of OS they will use (CE? PalmOS?). Also - I'm looking at getting a phone that will work in most of the US and Canada - any suggestions for one with cool features and lots of coverage (I don't understand the GSM/CDMA/AMPS thing...

I've seen pictures of cell phones that run PalmOS. They have the screen and the standard Palm buttons 'n everything. I think Qualcomm has such a phone, or will have one coming out

I *just* about bought one of these, but in the end it was just to damn big. I spoke with the rep at the cellular store, and he said he thinks people with Palms with buy them to get cellular, but they are too big to attract cellular folks. I agree. Qualcomm made the phone, but they sold off their consumer products business to Kyocera. Here's a link This phone works in the US and Canada (CDMA I think). I too would be very interested in hearing what Wireless stuff people are using in various countries, both in North America and elsewhere

I've seen a couple that seem to use a proprietry (non Palm/CE) OS - basically a bigger phone with an address book and todo list. Microsoft mentioned screen phones a lot in their .NET presentations (and the screen phone in their video that showed the possibilites of .NET was way cool). As to phones I'm also dead keen to find out what the deal is in the States. In Oz we use GSM 900/1800 but the States/Canada use GSM 1900, plus all the varieties of CDMA/TDMA. GSM coverage seems to be a little sporadic so I'm guessing that next time I'm over I should probably grab a CDMA phone instead of trying to rely on GSM. Anyone have a definitive answer on what's best? cheers, Chris Maunde

If someone ever wants to try WAP, here is an interesting link: wml.raging.com You can use it through your browser as if you would browse live on your WAP handy. I've never seen a better (cheaper) way to see how crap this WAP stuff is

I have to agree. Having used WAP devices, and spent some time learning the coding environment, I have to say it's pretty hard to understand how this is going to change the world of computing. I see WAP being used for notification and confirmation stuff mostly ("Your MSFT stock is at $90, do you wish to sell?" with a Yes/No selection available.) I get a headache when I think about typing in a search term into google using the number keys.. Arg. I see cell phones really being 2 way pagers until voice recognition really comes in, and despite all the advances there, it will still be years and years. Tablets, AutoPCs, etc., I can see that going, but WAP is too simple to make that really valuable. The cellphone as payment device idea is cool. You walk up to a Coke Machine, hold up your cell phone, it says "Would you like to transfer $.95 into this pop machine" Yes/No. That would be valuable, but lord knows how long that kind of infrastructure is from being available. Hmmm
