interact with vista '3d' desktop

Hi, Ok i need some advice about what is the method, if any, for playing with the vista desktop... i recall microsoft saying it was essentially a 3d surface... so for the goal of making a alternate shell experience (something more 3d-ish)... is their some apis or what not that let you play with it?

I am not aware of any such service for altering that aspect of the Aero interface.
