Just wondering what everyone else uses for capturing screenshots in windows? Theres hundreds of programs on offer but i dont really know which one to pick. Preferably after a free one!

Shift+PrintScreen. It's free. Then you can paste it into Paint.NET - also free.

Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

I'm looking for an alternative to this. Something that allows me to, for example, press F3 and the screen will automatically capture the current window/screen and save it to a file on my computer. Pasting into paint is annoying when you have loads of screenshots to do

If you decide to go the commercial route, it's hard to beat SnagIt[^] for its list of features. It's about $50 but they've been known to give away older (but very capable) versions of their software on occasion. Watch for that. If you are using screen captures for documentation, web pages, or presentations, I really like TNT Screen Capture[^]. They have a bunch of features that dress up your screen shots and make them look very polished and better than the original. It's a bit cheaper, too, at ~$30. If you are looking for a free alternative, might this be helpful? Screen Capturing[^]. Enjoy, Robert C. Cartaino

Not really. Consider it job security :-\ Seriously, I've used SnagIt in the past and it works well for the price.

SnagIt, as mentioned in a previous post, sometimes posts older versions of its software for free. Debut Video Recorder can record from webcam as well as the screen into multiple image formats. Best thing is: FREE. Debut comes with a bunch of other free software as well (optional of course).

Keep an eye on http://www.giveawayoftheday.com. I saw them giving away TNT screen Capture for free. Its not bad, but not as many features as SnagIt
