"Watch" button in forums?

What does the "Watch" button in the forums do? I expected it would send me an email when a new post was made to the watched forums, but this didn't occur. Also the setting doesn't seem to be persistent. Anyone in the know?

It adds an entry to the "Watched Items" section in "My codeproject". Email alert would be a good feature.
