Yesterday in the Lounge there was a thread about whether it was outrageous that a guy got $3000 from his insurance company because he was injured in a car accident and couldn't work for a week. The headlines in the Danish press the last weeks and this has been about this guy that travelled to Thailand without proper travelling insurance. He got caught in a car accident and ended up with a brain damage. At first he got placed in the free hospital sector, but the doctors told his parent that the treatment he needed was only available at the payment sector, so they opted for the transfer. The situation was like this: Every day the parents debts were increasing way over their heads, but the transfer to Denmark would require a special plane and proper staff and it would cost them about $100.000. At first they tried to get help from the state, but the state is not by law comitted to help in this situation and declined. That made them go to the press and within days they raised hell, the insurance company where the guy had his other insurances were hardpressed to pay money that they wasn't actually owing and after a week the state offered a loan. Am I a coldhearted SOB for thinking: Why the f... do I have to pay through taxes for this moron that didn't bother to buy himself an insurance? (yes, it WAS a loan I know, but the parents are doing a press stunt at this moment to make it a present). "After all it's just text at the end of the day. - Colin Davies

So, what is the deal with this guy's injuries? Is he going to need continuous care for the rest of his life, is he brain dead or what? It seems like a heck of a lot of money to spend if the guy is brain dead. Personally, if I suffered an injury that left me brain dead, I would want to be put to death (If I can't think, I'm dead anyway). If he has any chance of living a somewhat normal life in the future, I think a loan to the family for his hospital costs is reasonable.

The details are somewhat unclear at this moment and I am also relieved that a solution was found , but what got me upset was the way the parents and the press handled this as if the state was responsible for getting him home. Oh well, I guess that if it stays a loan then it's ok... "After all it's just text at the end of the day. - Colin Davies
