On the fly copying?

No matter whether you use XP or Vista: When copying/deleting lots of files, the command line (xcopy, del /s) is much faster than Explorer. Or just get some replacement for Explorer, especially on Vista.
Explorer2 Lite is pretty good if you want an Explorer replacement: http://www.zabkat.com. Regards, --Perspx

I'll have to look at that. Finally got fed up, cancelled, set the MyBook back onto the desktop machine I want to backup. Bastard finally found the drive, doing the xcopy as mentioned earlier, looks like it might be better now. Just hope the desktop machine doesn't BSOD like it loves to do.

Yes they always seem to happen at the most annoying times, such as when opening and printing coursework on the morning of the day it's due ;P However, *Looks at signature* You have to love Uncyclopedia

I remember that as a college student. But, try it while being a faculty member on the way out to class ;P

;P I find it hilarious when Mr. Gates shows off Windows at a conference or expo and it BSODs... It must be quite a tricky situation to get out of... ;P Regards, --Perspx

I wonder about that, too. But since he's supposedly retired now, he doesn't have to do that anymore.

Vista is sitting here "discovering items", and calculating how long to take with copying files. I am backing up about 40 gigs worth of stuff. Is there a way to get the damn thing just to start copying right away? Instead of screwing around figuring out how long it'll take.

Quite honestly I think it is in spirit of concurrency. As far as copying goes I don't think there are many issues, but think about moving a folder to its parent. You could get nightmare-ish results.

You can speed the explorer.exe process up, but other than that I do not think their is a way without another copy program. You can speed it up through TaskManager or by using PowerMenu.

robocopy ended up doing the job for me. Took a little while going through all the different command line switches that are available. Doing a
robocopy c: f:\MyBook\Desktop /s: 0 /w: 0 /mir
was what I needed. essentailly it was a mirror copy with 0 retries and 0 seconds of waiting between reties."The clue train passed his station without stopping." - John Simmons / outlaw programmer "Real programmers just throw a bunch of 1s and 0s at the computer to see what sticks" - Pete O'Hanlon
