DVD rentals - grr

I rent DVD's now and again when I'm bored. The big bummer with DVD's is that unlike tapes, they can't survive being tossed aside like VHS tapes. As much as I hate the VHS system, boy are they durable! People just don't look after the DVD's properly. The one I have here (Fight Club) looks like somebody has been cleaning their sandpaper with it or something. Don't they realise other customers have to use these? Over time the shop is going to have to replace ones that customers complain about, which costs them money also. I'm not yet into DVD's but since the player price has fallen so drastically here, I'm sure I'll be getting one soon. I have some very old CD'd that have hardly been used that are in a similar condition. And when double-sided DVDs hit the market big folks fingures will be everywhereon them. I now think they should have been encased like the 1.4MBFloppies are. I have heard that CD's now have an estimated life of 50 yrs, but when they first came out they were said to be permanent storage. So anyone who put a CD in a timecapsual like for the millenium stuff is only sending a blob of plastics to the future. Regardz Colin J Davies

Actually, double-sided DVDs are not too common anymore. They were a temporary measure until dual-layer DVDs could be easily and cheaply produced. Now, what'd be *really* cool IMHO, would be to write the data in such a way that it appeared as a logo upon examination. I don't know if there's any way to accomplish that and still have a useable disk, but still... :)

You can get a CD Writer that can write images into the blank bits of CDRs. I saw it a while ago on slashdot, but can't find it now :( The 2 drawbacks were that it can only put images into the blank outer bit of a disc (so if you use the full capacity, you can't add an image), and that it only works on CDRs and RWs - you won't be able to press it onto a normal silver CD and still see the image -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
