We just received the following email through general distribution here where I work: ALL, The top two threats facing personnel at Redstone Arsenal are: TORNADOS, and ACTIVE SHOOTER: the disgruntled employee who "goes postal" It linked a document for us to review about what do if someone starts shooting. I noticed that "shoot back" wasn't among the suggested remedies. It also said that if you are wounded, you should "NEVER GIVE UP!" I will have to remember that.

I am speechless. So, they KNOW that their employees are unhappy, and their solution is to warn people never to give up ?

Well, from my vantage point I don't think the workforce as a whole is unhappy. There are always disgruntled or stressed-out people everywhere...some choose to go postal, for whatever reason. I thought it was odd that our two greatest dangers were from shooters and tornados. Tornados I understand, we have had a few. I don't recall anyone going "postal" here, at least in the last 40 years. Absent from the list were bombs, poison in the coffee pot, "accidentally" falling down the stairs, getting run down in the cross walk, etc. As silly as they are, it seems they would be just as likely as getting shot on a secure installation.

You've got it all wrong. They are encouraging their people never to give up. This, of course, is all you need to worry about when you've been gut-shot and your intestines are spilling out all over the floor.

First thing I thought of when I read that was Galaxy Quest: Never give up, never surrender!

So, who do you suppose the boss pissed off this time?

Par for the course, IMO. I've never known management to actually address the problem. Instead, they spout "stay the course." Of course, they're not talking about someone going postal, but still... Marc

Hello there, friend... Ya say your job's a drag, with more tedious work piling up each day? And ya finally got a good parking spot, but a passing tornado took your car with it? And Jim from the help desk shot you in the stomach after you transferred a call, and then shot himself? And when you crawled to the first aid station, you found out they'd replaced it with a vending machine? And you spent your last quarter on coffee? Is that what's troublin' you, bunky?
Well, grab that pistol off the floor, and shoot out the lock! Show 'em what being a dedicated employee is all about!
You'll never give up, never give up, never give up that ship!----
You're right. These facts that you've laid out totally contradict the wild ramblings that I pulled off the back of cornflakes packets.
