It would be fantastic if it were possible to attach images to message board threads; even if the maximum size was limited.

I'm still of two minds on that one. - will it lead to abuse and posting of inappropriate material (since it's harder to moderate all messages in all forums) - will it lead to lazy people posting 1600 x 1200 full screen shots of their code instead of forcing them to paste just the relevant piece of code (though I know this doesn't always happen) - will it cause excessive bandwidth issues?

      cheers, Chris Maunder

Nope. Not going to happen. Our resident kidiots would attach NSFW images and make those of us stuck working for companies with IT prudes unable to visit.

Attach images of WHAT? I don't see any REAL need for this feature. Lazy people asking questions on the boards will attach a 3MB bitmap of their screenshot. It may not be useless, but it is really not required.

Have you considered recruiting volunteer forum moderators?

There are lots of useful reasons to allow image posts: - Diagrams and/or sketches to describe an idea or problem. - If you have some form of visual defect in your program, it is much easier to show a picture of the problem than to write endless posts just describing it. I am sure that there would be a way to limit the file size to something reasonable. Perhaps there could be other limitations as well, images can only be posted by the person who started the thread. Content of images could be a problem to those who abuse the forums. Perhaps images should be blocked by default until they are approved by a moderator? And once a person has been approved once or twice, in the future their images are no longer blocked by default?

I agree it would be convenient. Maybe it could be limited to the Lounge and to this forum (sometimes it's necessary to show a screenshot of some problem). I don't see a need for this in any of the programming forums. To reduce abuse, maybe limit the number of images per day for each member. Overall, probably a good idea, with some restrictions.

                Best wishes, Hans

What if the use of images was restricted to the more serious areas of the forums. For example, no image upload support in the general discussions area.

They don't even take the time to type it out properly. This is all you get from them - "Plz hlp. It is not working". Now, I'll expect them to draw diagrams and sketches to describe their problem! At least on the programming forums, I don't see any need for this feature.

I didn't vote your post down, but I just wanted to comment that you will see a kneejerk reaction to giving the posters in the programming forums the slightest ability to cause problems on this site. As someone else has commented, posting NSFW pix is a serious concern. Let me also say this: I have had several readers of my articles post links to screenshots (on some free image site) when they wanted me to see some visual problem. Anyone, in any forum, can do this today, if they really felt it was necessary.

You could always host your image on specialized website (like imageshack) and post the link in your message. In general, there's no need for an image (and as already said, lazy people will post a screenshot of their code). If it is really required, then a hosting site is an appropriate solution I think.

And if their instructor gave them a flowchart graphic, it will immediately be posted here! And here's another scary thought - what if people started putting images of cute kittens and puppies in their sigs? I think we're going to need a "don't show me any images" option for the forums.

The current CP editor features drive me insane most of the time. Posting images would be an easy way to escape such insanity :D There should be an ignore html tags tag so I can put whatever I want within a pre tag and not have to worry about the content getting mangled.
