Can't Beloved Leader make up his mind?

      We're going nuclear!
      OK, we'll cut back. :)
We'll push ahead with our nuclear program!
Well, no, we'll abandon our nukes for assistance. :)
      We're making weapons now!

      I suppose that's how a psychopath's mind functions. :~

      Cheers, Vıkram.

Touché! Sorry, I've never heard of Umm Kulthum. I don't really do justice to Arabic music, but I listened to Marcel Khalife's Salamoun Aliki (sp?) today. I can't understand a word of it (although I know Salam Alaikum means Peace Be With You) but it's so beautiful it hurts. Any particular recommendations for Umm Kulthum? At the moment, all I can give you is Celtic Woman[^] and Strings[^] Don't miss the latter: they're an awesome band from Pakistan! Pity I discovered them only last year.

          Cheers, Vıkram.

That means the exact same thing only its singular and directed at a female; technically, the difference between Salamoun and Al-Salam is that in the latter, the implication is that the peace of God be with you (being that in Islam, Peace (Salam) is one of God's names). Its a gorgeous song. Every time I listen to it it makes the hair on my neck and what's left on my head to stand. He's got songs that make men cry. I'll email you a translation when I have the time. Its an ode to mothers by the way. Now you have me listening to it! For Um Kalthoum, pretty much anything and everything. She is brilliant, but to really get how wonderful her songs are, you would need a better understanding of Arabic especially when she's singing poetry like in "Al-atlal" (The relics) and "Alf Leila wa leila" (One thousand and one nights)

I don't think he or his father ever had any trouble making up their mind. The game they play is simple. Lucy and Charlie Brown play it with a football every year. "I will create nuclear weapons -- unless you give me something." "Okay, here is something." "Thank you. . .I will create nuclear weapons -- unless you give me something." The only thing that is amazing is that the U.S. government (Clinton and Bush) keep believing that they can negotiate with him.

I tend to be at the pcifist end of the spectrum but agree with you. As long as he wins the game he will play it. All they have to do is get the Chinese government to stop his supply of luxuries so he suffers like his people do.

And we have just elected another guy even more philosophically predisposed to precisely the same kind of negotiating. The really amazing thing is that any one still believes that we can negotiate with any of these types any where on the planet, whether it be Korea, Iran, Hamas, Syria, Pakistan. Yet there is a significant population which continues to insist that we try. If Iraq does become some semblance of a stable democracy, it will indeed be the model for the only effective way of dealing with any of them.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

I'm not sure what to think of Kim Jong... On the surface it looks exactly like you portray. And that may be it, and I've thought all along that even talking to him will only cause problems. But at the same time, who knows what he'd do if we called his bluff. He's the special "rub himself down with peanut butter and bay at the moon" kind of crazy. But in the end, we have to find out, we can't play ball with him. I think a best strategy would be to know going in exactly what his game is, and string him along as long as possible while pretending to be his friend (you know, like China, Russia, Saudi, etc do to us). Would be even better if we had some leverage on China to put some pressure on Kim to move the way we want him to (head in the oven, that kinda thing).

It may be that China may have learned, in the last few months, that the fortunes of their country are tied to the fortunes of ours. In the long run they may try to change that; in the short run it behooves them to work with us.

Given what has happened with the peanut butter recall (I think of it as Jimmy Carter's revenge), we should hope that he licks himself clean afterward.
