Turns out that beautiful music we heard at the inauguration was tone-synched. Apparently the weather was just too bad for the quartet of classical musicians. The Marine Band and choruses, which performed throughout the ceremony, are made of sterner stuff. Everything they performed was live, up close, and personal. Source[^]

I suspect the instruments were not their usual ones too as they're usually left in a concert hall several hours to aclaimatise before a gig. I intended to work in a dig at Dubbya here somehow and failed. Damn.

I suspect that stringed, wooden instruments are much more susceptible to outdoor weather than blown, metal ones. Listening to a violin descend into sounding like a cat going through a mincer might have taken the edge off the dignity of the event. At least they didn't get a more "cute" quartet to give the public performance...

Isn't this more about the instruments' relative susceptibility to climatic conditions, rather than that of the performers? Sorry, I was interrupted whilst writing the above, so missed the preceding post.

Right, the strings much more than the wood though. But brass and reed instruments suffer a negligible amount. I suspect that's why marching bands are only percussion, wood winds and brass. Well, that and the fact that cellos and bases would look pretty funny on wheels.

Visit BoneSoft.com for code generation tools (XML & XSD -> C#, VB, etc...) and some free developer tools as well.

So did the big 'O' get the Chinese opening ceremony organizer to do the inauguration?

I'm pretty sure I would not like to live in a world in which I would never be offended. I am absolutely certain I don't want to live in a world in which you would never be offended. Dave
