Because they don't pay enough ? Farms are squeezed on all sides, as their suppliers tell them year after year they are paying less, or buying less from them.

An acquaintance of mine was from Romania. Her brother comes to the US every year and goes to Ocean City, Maryland and washes dishes. He is an electrical engineer in Romania, but says he can make more money washing dishes in Ocean City during the summer than he can the rest of the year as an engineer in Romania. The government of Romania threatens the relatives (in Romania) of those who exceed their green card. Rather harshly I hear so they most always go back. Hosting government doesn’t have to worry too much about them staying. It’s been a few years (about 10) since I heard this, things maybe different now.

Because it takes a particular type of mental retartdation for Farm work that has been bred out of the UK populaiton by centuries of Industrialisation. ;) Actualy, is crappily paid and physically hard. Lifes a lot easier on the dole.

Because UK workers think that farm work is beneath them (wrong), hard work (right) and low-paid (possibly). The foreign workers on the farms here in Cornwall are all in contact by mobile, and are continuously checking how much different farmers are offering. If they here of a better offer elsewhere they will drop what they are doing and go to work at the other farm, leaving the original one in the lurch until the farmer offers more money, which he has to do if his crop isn't to go to waste.
