Eminem....

In 10 years it will be Eminem who? Nirvana who? Personally, I don't get my literary cues from a bunch of pre-teens. My spell checker said it the best "Eminem" is misspelled, ignore? Because they're both damned fine acts in their own genre and neither one is sacred any more than I am? ;) Actually, you'd be surprised how many people like both. I used to Sysop one of the music forums on CompuServe and when I first started I used to explain to people that I was unusual in liking some stuff from most genres but not all stuff from any one genre. But I always used these two as an example until I realised that most people who liked one liked the other. Maybe you should give it a go? ;) Jeremy Falcon wrote: As I type this, I'm listening to "The Unforgiven" on the black album Why? ;) I always think this album was overrated, a tad banal considering some of the stuff they've released (although And Justice For All... is the worst CD, still good compared to some other "metal" bands, but weak for Metallica). Equally, Load and Reload are often unfairly given a hard time - even I barely listened to them for two years and then suddenly realised they were fantastic pieces of music, just different. But still Ride the Lightning is one of the finest things ever to grace the record shelves... seriously, I love that CD. My mobile phone (Samsung T100, proper sound, not that Nokia noise) is set up to play Call of Ktulu as a ringtone - startling! See how I came to be a Sysop? You give me two lines, I ramble on for hours and give you lots to argue with me over ;) Paul

I just got done watching the MTV Video Music Awards, I had watched it so I could see The Hives and The Vines play but I also saw somthing else I enjoyed... When Eminem went up to receive an award you could hear many people boo-ing him. It was definatly very much worth it. Of course if I was there I would have join in and Boo-ed him! How about you?
I actually caught that bit, suprisingly. This is what happened (or what was shown) more or less:
- Short skit with that "poop-on" dog from Conan O'Brian and Moby
- Eminem enters, is approched by the dog, cameras, etc.
- Dog is asking why Eminem refered to Moby as a "36 year-old bald-headed fag" (in the single "Without Me" on his last CD)
- Eminem pushes the dog away ("Get that thing out of my face") and moves on.
- A bit later Eminem accepts an award, and begins to thank people, reading names from a small piece of paper. Crowd noise is mostly neutral.
- Eminem pauses, "I started making a list, but didn't get it finished" .. "That little Moby girl threw me out of my zone for a minute".
- Some booing starts, camera does not show crowd
- "Keep booing, keep booing, little girl. I will hit a man with glasses."
- Lots more booing.

Eminem was booed after winning the award for best male video for Without Me - in which he dressed as Batman's sidekick Robin. After accepting the award from one of his frequent targets, Christina Aguilera, he announced that techno artist Moby was "a girl". "Yeah, keep booing," Eminem said, as the audience began to boo. Appearing to look in Moby's direction, he added, "I will hit a man with glasses."

Sadly every time I go to the Metallica section of my CD collection, RTL, Load or Reload (or all three) just leap out of their own accord and climb physically into my CD player. Jeremy Falcon wrote: Personally, my favorite album is Reload Good call. Gotta love that Low Man's Lyric, and Where The Wild Things Are rocks! Jeremy Falcon wrote: LOL! Yeah, I just found that out shortly after I posted. I read on Moby's website in one of his journal entries that off camera Eminem called Moby a pussy and threatened to kick the shit out of him. All I have to say is man, it takes someone really "tough" to threaten a pacifist like Moby. Eminem is definatly one troubled person...
-
Oh, you're just trying to troll, aren't you? Okay, I'll bite... Boo-ed him for what exactly? Because you don't like his music? So what? I wouldn't boo N-Sync at an awards ceremony, I'd just walk out to the bar. Because you don't like what he has to say? Have you listened? I don't mean to the sound bytes the critics feed you, I mean really listened. He's not saying what his critics think he is, Elton John got the joke, what's your problem? Because he has a lot more money than you and you're resentful? You do realise that by hating him you (collectively, not you personally) cause the controversy that makes him rich, don't you? (this is the biggest irony of the Eminem phenomena - he'd be nothing without his critics) Seriously, what has he done that makes you want to Boo? Like him or not, like his music or not, he's frighteningly talented and is one of the most influential artists of the decade and millions of people, of many age groups, do enjoy listening to him. Deal with it. Who do you honestly think will be remembered longest? Eminem or the Hives? I mean don't get me wrong, I like the Hives but I couldn't buy the CD when all three songs I've heard sound the same! I just take the one I got with the Spiderman Soundtrack and I'm happy :). Paul
It's all just marketing an image. he's an entertainer, and people eat up that kind of controversy and attitude. Like watching a cheesy movie, or some soap. I see Eminem as some jerk-off character who raps for a living, and rather than a 2 hr. movie I watch it play out in the media over the course of a few years. He sells millions because its entertaining, not beause of social commentary. I listen to him occasionally, because I get a chuckle out his rhymes. He's not a great rapper, but his lyrics crack me up sometimes. BW {insert witty/thought-provoking saying here}

Well, i'm sure that's true, to a point at least. But at this point he knows he's hit on something marketable, and so he's sticking with it; whatever he needs to draw on in order to do so though...
