Man, what the hell's going on in New Mexico?!? $2 in for each $1 out most of the time. DC is $5 - $6 per $1?!??! :omg: Well, that makes sense. Just a thought... Normally I wouldn't suggest such a thing, but I think Hawaii is a special case. If you can't afford to live in Hawaii, you shouldn't be allowed to... It's Hawaii!

Nothing in there is too surprising. Taxes paid are to some extent controlled by the cost of living in a state. South Carolina where I live now has a COL about 2/3rds of Massachusetts where I used to live. That's reflected in the salaries paid - $50,000 is a very legitimate wage down here, except perhaps in Charleston. But a fair amount of the block grants made to the States are made on a per capita basis with no recognition of the difference in COL.

I thought you didn't care how the federal government spends our money that we give freely? Are you complaining about how it is spent? hmmmmm?[^]

How far are you from Hilton Head? We recently purchased some commercial property there. I keep trying to get out to visit more than once a year but it's just been crazy busy this last year or so.

A fair distance - I'm way west of there - relatively close (50 mi) to Charlotte.

Low population states almost always get more per capita. A combination several factors. Their senators have as much influence as those from populous states. Military bases and highways are both major cash cows. The former tend to be in low populated states where land is cheap and their training won't bother other people. Interstates/major highways need to be maintained for the full longhaul traffic load to be a national asset even though the percentage of local traffic on the roads is much lower than around large cities.

Maybe I did't read too carefully, but how is 'federal spending recieved' defined? Is that all federal funds reaching a state for all purposes? Does it include, for example, social security, militar bases, welfare payment, etc? Or is this just federal money given directly to the state itself for various other purposes? The other question is why would those states paying more than they recieve wish to stay in a union with other states that are perpetually receiving more than they pay back?
Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.
