My God, John! You're quoting FoxNews now? Caution, it may be a trick. Actually I wouldn't get too excited, if it happens it will not be via legislation or executive order. It'll be stealth, a demand by the FCC that since newspapers are going under and the airways are public - we need radio stations to produce more local news. That'll choke out talk radio. The FCC can do what it damn well pleases, they don't need legislation or POTUS approval. I'll buy you beer if it doesn't happen in the next 4 years, well, I'll send you the cost of a beer.

Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.

He'll let someone else do the dirty work. But I'm sure he'll keep his own hands clean on the issue.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

Even a 100% local content requirement wouldn't stop talk radio. It would just mean a whole lot of local right-wingers. There is no shortage of them. Australia has no national talk radio hosts but is teeming with local right-wing talk radio. Nothing remotely like a 100% local content requirement is ever going to be passed. Rush and Sean and Gordon and Michael are perfectly safe.

interesting. so right-wing talk radio, I'll call it conservative, is an international phenom? Ever read any research as to the reason?

I don't know if you'd call it research. I have heard duelling interpretations from left and right along fairly predictable lines.

Yep, it's best for him to distance himself from it. It will be done more subtly soon enoughwith localization and the like. Which may even be the reason that some high profile people have brought it up recently, so he can say he's not for it and everybody will be happy and stop watching for it.

This whole localization thing is just a case of the right buying into the left's rationalizations. The right utterly dominates talk radio. How does the left explain it? One explanation that has been offered is that large radio networks with conservative owners insist on hiring right wing people. This is part of the left's mythology: that ordinary people (radio listeners in this case) are more left wing than they seem, but corporate machinations prevent them from expressing it. The truth is that the main reason the right dominates talk radio is because right-wing hosts get better ratings. There is much controversy over why this is so but, whatever the reason for it, it is a fact. What that means is that, in the very unlikely event that localization rules really did seriously interfere with syndicated right-wing talk radio, this would largely just be replaced by local right-wing talk radio. The breadth of opinion might expand a little, given the need to search for talent rather than just broadcast nationwide a small number of people, but the overall flavour of radio would remain conservative --- at least until the left figures out how to attract an audience.
