    Hey to all, I'm conducting a CP poll, to get some information on developers in general. I recently saw some posts where a bunch of people said they were INTP, which I am, and that got me thinking. I'm a developer myself (VC++), and while I'm not considering suicide, I have considered it in the past (when I was ~15). I'm wondering, how many developers here have thought about committing suicide at some point in their lives? Also, if you have considered it, what was the reason? I suppose mine was that my parents were in a very messy divorce and getting through that was quite difficult. Any thoughts? Anonymous (Sorry guys)

Were you mad at them? Or did they make you feel as if it was your fault? Please don't take offense at this, i'm not meaning to be insensitive, just curious!

          I think many organizations have conducted such investigations or surveys about this issue.As i know,the result is striking.So the number of members here once considering suicide are not small. But i doubt how many will admit the fact of his once "silly" doing? :-O Life is short,play more.(microsoft xbox advertising) :) this is my signature for forums quoted from shog*9: I can't help but feel, somewhere deep within that withered, bitter, scheming person, there is a small child, frightened, looking a way out.

            I've been pretty depressed, which I'm certain is not unusual, but never enough to seriously think about ending it all. Although I have several friends (non-developers), who have either tried or given it some serious thought, or talked about it frequently. I remember telling a friend of mine, who would often joke about killing herself, that if she didn't shut up about it, I would have to go ahead and take care of the job for her. Sounds callous, I guess, but it helped open up the conversation for her to get things out. BW {insert witty/thought-provoking saying here}

              Yes, I've considered it. Until recently I was considering it very often. The reason, boredom - pretty much done all that I was interested in, thought it might be different to see whats really on the other side. Michael :-) Programming is great. First they pay you to introduce bugs into software. Then they pay you to remove them again.

                I've come closer to it than I care to think about on 3 occasions - 2 of them in the last year (no prizes for guessing why). Fortunately, I don't think I could ever take that final step - I've just got too much optimism about life to do that. On the other side of the coin, I've talked a couple of people back from the same abyss. The knowledge that a friend could be about to kill themselves unless you can help them to see hope is a sobering one. All I would say to anyone low enough to think about it is don't - life is far too precious to waste. There's always someone who cares about you. Seriously considering suicide as a teen is not an uncommon occurance at all, neither (sadly) is actually carrying it out, though the figures are highly unbalanced. I think Colin touched upon most of the reasons - for me anyway. The reason I had never followed through completly was because there is still a lot more I want to get out of my life. I'm not afraid of admitting it, but then again you should expect that from me. :suss: I've never considered killing myself through boredom though! :omg:

                        I dunno really, I just have been having a particularly boring day and that made me smile. I saw that list in {}s and went "Haha! Sets! That's great! I should've thought of that! From now on, all my lists are going to look like sets." OK, I'm weird, but we all know that.

                              I get depression every now and again, and it sucks. I'm one of the many who get Seasonal Affective Disorder, I bet a few here do also. Now that sucks even more, but I never take anti-depressents. I'd rather be depressed and recover naturally than be on a manufactured cloud 9.

                                The truth is, more people have thought about it than they'd like to admit. I used to think about it, and I even went through with it once. Wait, it makes sense. I tried to OD on sleeping pills. Dumbass me thought they were strong enough for the job, but they were just over-the-counter sleeping pills. It's a good thing I don't know jack about drugs. I was majorly fucked up for three days though. Anyway, my point is. You're not alone if you've had these thoughts. I've been through more than one person should ever see, but there's no point in writing a 10 mile long post looking for pitty about it. Since I've made it through; however, I've learned to enjoy life more than the average person. You can too! Just remember, nothing's ever going to be "perfect", but things can always get better. So, what I'm saying is... There will always be something (or someone :)) you can do to make you feel better. You just have to reach inside yourself to find what it is, be honest, and work with the results. For me, it was getting back into shape, but people are different. Just find out whatever it is for you and go for it. Best wishes! :rose: Jeremy Falcon Imputek "C# is the answer to a question nobody asked." - Chris Losinger
