The same reason we celebrate St. Patrick's day. A bunch of immigrants grew up thinking it was an important holiday - and it's a great excuse to drink. For that matter, why do we celebrate Christmas as a legal holiday? It's a Celtic holiday pimped out as a Roman one. It certainly has very little to do with a Nazarene who lived and died a couple of millenia ago, and absolutely nothing to do with the history of America. The Puritan Christians of New England thought that the holiday was an abomination, although I suspect ths slave-owning aristocracy of Virginia and and South Carolina welcomed it as another opportunity to indulge themselves in conspicuous consumption. Good idea, I know someone who owns a t-shirt making shop. He could make up a hundred of 'em, all saying: "'I don;t know what I am talking about' ~ Ilion D," and then Chris could hand them out as prizes in the next programming contest. Do you have a picture of yourself he could print on the reverse side of the T-Shirt?
