MailOnline: Family of father stabbed to death by three thugs is denied compensation... because he tried to fight back[^]

The family of a man who was stabbed to death by teenage thugs after he asked them to keep the noise down have been denied compensation - because he tried to fight off his killers. Kevin Johnson, 22, was brutally murdered by the gang who invited him to 'meet Mr Stanley' during a confrontation outside his home moments before plunging a blade into his chest, arm and back. The young father collapsed a few feet from his front door whilst the trio - aged 19, 16 and 17 - ran off in 'triumphant mood' before stabbing their second victim a short distance away. But after applying for a maximum £11,000 in compensation Mr Johnson's family have been told that they do not meet the criteria as he tried to fight off the gang who took his life. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority has twice rejected John Johnson’s case. They ruled that the demolition worker had 'significantly' contributed to his own death. ...

First, it seems odd for any government to be paying money to families of murder victims. Nevertheless, since the British government is doing it, for whatever reason, what's up with this demand that British so-called citizens must be Eloi?

From your title, I thought you were going to suggest that God had forsaken you, or the US, or the globe: "Eloi Eloi lema sabachthani?" would have been very appropriate for this time of year. And how terribly humanistic of you to be referencing a socialist like H.G. Wells, instead. :omg:

Maybe it's cheaper than hiring police?

This appears to be tabloid BS. What seems to have actually happened is that the tribunal said that he contributed to his death by leaving the safety of his house and confronting the youths rather than stay inside. Whether that should make a difference to compensation eligibility I leave it to others to decide, but this "tried to fight off his killers" stuff is ludicrous on the face of it and appears to be contradicted by other evidence.

"This is what the letters say, if Kevin hadn't left the safety of his home he wouldn't have died. "This is absolutely right. But he wanted to move those toe rags on and he was hailed as a hero by the Chief Constable of Northumbria Police for his actions. "And then they turn round and say that because of that we don't qualify for compensation? I'm determined to keep going with this. These rules and regulations need to be changed."

Just reviving an ancient tradition, Blood Money. Used to be paid by the kin of the murderer, now, like health care, paid from taxes.

Well, whatever that sentence is supposed to mean, you don't have to concern yourself on our account.

Some here on the east coast, but mostly in DC area here in the US love to read about escapades the Montgomery County (in state of Maryland), specifically the county counsel and county executive Isaiah Leggett. They are funny and sad and profoundly insane, they are constantly in the news and the residents of that county are continuously mocked. Unfortunately the escapades of some of UK local jurisdiction read like Montgomery county in our area but funny is funny and sad is sad no matter where it is.

I suspect there are jurisdictions like that everywhere. Except, of course, in South Carolina

The family of murder victims can, and do, bring civil actions against the murderers. The damages are then more in line with those awarded to the Ministry of Defence typist - if the murderers have money. But they seldom do, which is why a Criminal Injuries Compensation scheme was introduced. Anything for a story, the Daily Wail is comparing apples and oranges, setting the £11,000 compensation against a lump sum of civil and CICA claims awarded to an unspecified number of, horror of horrors, prisoners. Ilion posted this because he just likes the idea of statist governments being Morlocks and we poor so-called (so called because we are) citizens being Eloi. I know he's just a troll, but he is funny (and sad).
