I remember, was it "Simons the Outlaw Programmer" said that Texas is the only state that can "legally" secede from the union when this topic was last discussed in the Soapbox. What I think is we may have a new GOP candidate for president in 2012 named Perry.

Now that is scary. I don't know many conservatives that really care for him. He gets elected because he is simply not a democrat. He has raised business taxes and has been caught lying many times on emanate domain issues and property tax issues. The worst is....he is an aggie; only trust them when it comes to growing fruits and veggies.

Sounds like a typical politician. Apparently he also forgot that when Texas exercised its legal right to secede, Lincoln said, "Not so fast," and when it was forcibly reinstated in the Union, there was no provision made for it changing its mind again. Texas has a better chance of becoming part of Aztlan (map[^]) than it does of becoming independent again, I am afraid.

Yeah, I didn't comment on this since it stills seems hard to explain to people that the results of the civil war fundamentally changed the nature of our republic, at least in practice.

That is what most people don't understand about the Civil War. The reason they were shooting at each other was over the issue of seccession, not slavery. But the issue was settled militarily not constitutionally. However, I still think it would be better to try to get the blue states to secceed from us rather than vice versa. simply by the rest of us being a bunch of recalcitrant assholes electing the most right wing christian fundamentalists we can find. For my part, they can go. Don't let the door hit yer ass on the way out.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

I think it's working fine for Stan - he doesn't get out much. ;) When he starts talking about "the rest of us," I say, "Mr. Shannon - look behind you. No one is following." ;)

I recall that, and in that he's wrong. *ALL* US States have the legal and moral right to secede from the Union. Whether it's practical ... or wise ... at any particular time is a different matter.

So far so good. I figure at least some degree of back lash over the next couple of election cycles ought to get new england and the west coast talking about secceeding from us.

So far so good. I figure at least some degree of back lash over the next couple of election cycles ought to get new england and the west coast talking about secceeding from us.

I don't think so. I think the whole country is circling the drain and it doesn't matter which political party you worship. If we can't get back to common sense we are going to end up as one big banana republic or a bunch of little ones.
