I found this to be very interesting. On the one hand, it doesn't make a bit of sense but on the other hand it does. Charging the homeless for shelter in NYC.[^]

Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.

I saw a report on Fox this afternoon. Seems to me the city is right, these people can afford a place to live so why shouldn't they pay rent? At the same time, the critics are right: the homeless will never save enough for a security deposit (especially in NYC where you have to be rich, white and liberal to snag a rent-controlled apartment on the upper west side) if they have to pay rent on a room in a shelter. They seem to be caught between Barack and a hard place.

End rent control. [On the hope that this link will work properly] Basic economics[^]

Won't do anything for the homeless; and since the people who have these unbreakable leases are the type who contribute to Bloomberg's campaign, it ain't gonna happen either. None of the above should be taken as my disagreeing with you. (Wonder of wonders!)

Sure it will. Not tomorrow, but over time (mid-term) it will -- the law of supply and demand will see to it. When it is *profitable* to build "affordable housing" in NYC, then it will be built. The rent control regime ensures that it is not profitable to put "affordable housing" on the market.

            True, that.
