I think it is more a matter of we aren't implementing any real stimulus plan at all. So little of our funds have been handed out that there's been little or no impact on the economy any which way. Whereas, China and Australia, two countries that committed to 'timely, temporary, and targeted' expenditures are showing signs of recovery. But never fear, Stan. The Prez announced today that our deficit forecast has gone up another 1/th of a trillion. Of course, this has nothing to do with Obama. It is, or so we are told on MSNBC, Bush's fault for over estimating tax revenues.

The idea also captures the essential difference between most professional Republican and most professional Democrats: the Republican politicians for whom being a politician is their identity say to their Democrat counterparts, "Sure! But not so fast."

I wouldn't put it that optimistically. Australia is showing signs that it is moderating the recession. Our growth figures are among the best (least bad) of the developed economies. But things are still going to get worse before they get better.

I'm simply saying that I expect that growth will stagnate and unemployment in Australia will get worse over the next year or so. Australia's economic performance will be better than that of most developed economies but will still be unsatisfactory until the global economy recovers. When the global economy recovers, things in Australia will get back to normal.

I disagree. Down turns in the economy are like forest fires - they burn off undergrowth and rejuvenate the forest, creating an even stronger ecology. Artificially shifting wealth around to put them out simply leaves all the old problems behind yet reduces the economic capability to deal with the next fire which will come all the sooner and be even more intense. We are doing nothing but putting off the inevitable and making it all the more destructive when it comes.

Yeah, disease epidemics do the same. What is your position on attempting to lessen those?

Actually, if you take the opportunity to: 1. Rebuild infrastructure, 2. Get your regulatory house in order, then giant steps will be made to deal with the "old problems".

No, that would be something completely different altogether. That would be more like a forest being infested with deadly wood borers or something.
John Carson wrote:

But that is only if the correct infrastructure is built and the correct regulations implemented - which ain't gonna happen. No bureaucracy ever has or ever will achieve that.

Sure it did. I'm saying the only way the economy will improve is if we allow it to occasionally fail. Preventing it from failing will never fix anything. It will only make the problem worse.

Yes, you're the guy in love with the boom and bust cycle. So the big guys can manipulate it and make a killing and the little guys get wiped out ever 10 years or so and have to start over.

I think that the big guys often get badly hurt or wiped out in a full-blown crash. That's what we are trying to prevent - so the same big guys can continue for another ten years. Look at who Obama has "fixing" the economy: the same guys who fracked it up.

True, certainly not all the big guys are anywhere near as smart as they think and they got nailed. Some even slid all the way to the bottom. However, Stan's dream period of the 19th century US economy was full of monopoly, market fixing, market cornering, and his favorite boom and bust cycle.

It all depends on sitting where, doesn't it? When it comes to my lap, for instance. . . Don't sell Palin short, nor Obama long. Neither MSNBC or Fox have got it right.

the Democrats, the Republicans and the media are woefully under estimating both Palin and her level of support. Well, let me correct that statement, they under estimate the staying power of her support and believe constant hammering and contrived ethics complaints will effect it. dead fucking wrong.

Well, just as four years ago hardly anyone had heard of Obama let alone would have considered him to be a viable candidate for President, I wouldn't be surprised to find out half-way throu 2011, that someone we have never heard of is the front-runner for the Rebublican nomination. Personally, I question whether Palin has a broad enough appeal to win an election, but four years ago, I would have said that about Hilary. Once that race got under way, I realised how wrong I was.
