Royal Bank of Scotland does. Since these days everything is done by electronic imaging and not the actual paper, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that it was happening. Of course that probably means that Punjab and Jose have access to your soc sec number and your bank account number. . .

Cheques issued to a British located payee and drawn on a foreign bank are dispatched from a British bank to that foreign bank for continued processing. And, cheques issued on a British bank to a British bank are processed according to information from here The Cheque & Credit Clearing Company, London[^]

I used to work in the banking industry and there was a lot of talk about sending the work to India to decision checks. They finally did that recently I learned from a friend of mine. The paper stays here, but 'securely' they decision the checks over seas. All the person there sees is what's in their browser. I didn't actually realize you were joking, at least not completely. ;P While the decisioner doesn't have access to the paper, they might as well considering they can print, etc the picture, address and many other information on the screen. It sounds like risk I never thought the banks would accept. If identity theft gets tracked back to something like this and publicized the press is going to have a field day with it. Aside from that, I'm not sure what else would happen.

When I was working at a large national one-off retailer (60,000 employees) a friend of mine who was a DBA was disciplined and demoted because he refused to send unencrypted personnel files to the company's new cost-saving super-duper payroll-processing center in India. He'd argued that all they needed to know was employee number, how much (or how much times hours) deductions and how to calculate them, and the name on the check.
