A little while back, you linked to an article in the NY Times. Now it is Salon!! Won't be long before you are wearing an Obama T-shirt and chanting: "Yes we can!"

Heck, John, I also listen to NPR and Bill Moyers on PBS, and any number of other sources in support of collectivism.

Point taken. That,however, would not be irony. Mr. Payne's own great-nephew is far more representative of what he fought against in WWII than anything this country has ever had to contend with throughout its entire history.

Thats hard to say since Long wasn't ultimately successful. All I really know about Long is what I have picked up reading more general treatment of that era, but my imprssion is that he was more of a populist and an opportunist than deeply committed to any given political paradigm. I suppose that would make him more like Hitler compared to Obama's Mussolini.

Thats hard to say since Long wasn't ultimately successful. All I really know about Long is what I have picked up reading more general treatment of that era, but my imprssion is that he was more of a populist and an opportunist than deeply committed to any given political paradigm. I expect my understanding of him is colored by "All the King's Men," but from what I have read, you have it right. There are interesting conspiracy theories that suggest FDR had him gunned down, fearing a fight for the '36 nomination.
