OR it's because I live in another country and had to think for a moment what he meant by 'elephant'. I'd guess that 90% of australians would never have got it, I know from reading a lot of US history that the two parties are represented as an elephant and a donkey. Which is pretty funny.

edit: I *think* that the elephant was originally intended as a dig at the GOP. As elephants are said to "never forget," so too the Republicans were being faulted for "never forgeting" the Civil War and the Democrats' complicity in it. And, as for the Democrats' symbol ... well, asses are said never to learn. Funny, indeed.
