I switch. Where's the elephant, I need to sign up ASAP. One can only turn a blind eye for so long.

One should never turn a blind eye in the first place; it's always a recipe for a disaster at some level. edit; Still, I'm interested in which specific straw was last for you? And, on the presumption that it's politics you're talking about, does this mean that you're no longer going to automatically assume that I'm wrong and/or stupid in what I say? That would be an interesting and welcome development.

OR it's because I live in another country and had to think for a moment what he meant by 'elephant'. I'd guess that 90% of australians would never have got it, I know from reading a lot of US history that the two parties are represented as an elephant and a donkey. Which is pretty funny.

edit: I *think* that the elephant was originally intended as a dig at the GOP. As elephants are said to "never forget," so too the Republicans were being faulted for "never forgeting" the Civil War and the Democrats' complicity in it. And, as for the Democrats' symbol ... well, asses are said never to learn. Funny, indeed.

I thought it was an ass, but I decided if I got it wrong in THAT direction, people would take offense. Thanks for the history lesson, I admit to having had no idea where they came from.

I think he has skimmed 1984. He appears to have misremembered "Newspeak" as "double speak" and "Ignorance is Strength" as "ignorance is bliss".

He is a pro-Israel hardliner, so presumably this is in reference to Obama's speech.
