No you haven't. You have told me to go see a doctor. That doesn't make money.

Seeing a doctor may help make you employable. But, me and others have suggested you spend some time learning to program, and looking for a job, or looking for a job in tech support, given that you have the skillz to steal internet, one would assume you're capable of helping people secure systems, etc. It all comes down to age old advice. Get a job, or study to become employable.

Assuming you magically make a ton of money, and decide to spend it trying to buy my employer ( I just googled, the price is 2.8 billion dollars, that assumes the price I saw was not just the main company, but all subsidiaries ), if I had to, I'd have no trouble finding a job in another field. So, your fantasy is not only pathetic, it's unworkable.

I used to have a job AND work on peoples computers on the side AND learn how to program and build my own software. One of the top managers at the Waffle House gave me a job after I worked on his computer. I even had a job as a PC Technician once, but you know what? It wasn't all that great. I worked for tips, I felt used. I never got anywhere. The only way I am ever going to make good money is if I figure out something I can do on my own and make the money myself. You are not meant to make money as a Jr. You are just cheap disposable labor. All I need to do is figure out something I could sell, or something addictive that will keep people coming back to my particular site for add revenue. If I have a definite solid idea that will at least make a few hundred, that will be enough for me to really buckle down and get it done, a step forward. I would appreciate any usable ideas.

OK - what skills do you have with which to make money ? You say you worked on computers on the side - why did you stop ? That sounds like a 'be your own boss, make all the money yourself' type scenario.

          CaptainSeeSharp wrote:

Well, that depends. If you're hired as skilled labour, you will be respected. If you take a non skilled job, and you work well at it, you will be respected. I've worked as a sales rep, I've put stickers in library books, I've set up science labs, I've worked in gardens. I've always got on well with my boss and always had their respect. I still talk to a lot of ex bosses socially, just because we were friends.

Your problem is that you're trying to think of a scam, instead of thinking in terms of 'what can I offer that will make people want to visit my site/buy my services/deal with me'.

I would imagine that making a few hundred bucks on the web can't be too hard. There's more than enough people on there that any half reasonable idea should net that sort of money. The only ideas I have, are the ones I've used. Get a job, work hard, study hard, be the best you can be, then take whatever chance comes your way. I have extensive skills with computers. I can build them, diagnose and repair hardware and software problems. I can even completely take apart a laptop and put it back together, I replaced a laptop motherboard once. As far as programming goes I am mainly a hobbyist but I know the ins and outs well enough to make something decent.

I was talking more about why did you stop freelancing computer support ? Family can suck. I told you about my being kicked out of home, so you realise that not everything has worked out for me, I've just made the most of where I am, and kept pushing onwards and upward.

So, instead of trying too hard to be a better programmer, concentrate on tech support type jobs. Do you apply for jobs like that ? Ideas are nothing without effort. You honestly want to get ahead? You have to be willing to do things you don't enjoy. I paved roads in 120+ degree heat in Phoenix to afford school. If I am not mistaken Christian spent time working as an IT guy. Hell, have you considered plumbing? Seriously, a master plumber makes insane money so does a master Electrician. You have to be willing to get inclemently better week over week. That is the only way, in any society that people who are starting with a finical disadvantage can improve their situation without a miracle. You don't need to have a perfect plan to improve things, you just need to work and prepare yourself to make the best of opportunities when they present themselves. This also means controling who you associate with. Negative people or people who aren't going anywhere are nothing but a drain on energy and time.

You can't fix them and they won't help you pull yourself out any rut. Forget about them for the time being. A lot of us have very ugly stories about our families but you have to forget about them for a little while while you take care of yourself.

Focus on your strengths then. Seriously. Advertise your skills and services on free sites like craigslist and be willing to take a little less and do a little extra until you can build up a solid referral network.

They say we are in a recession leading to a depression, but I have more work than I can handle, I work for a great organization that allow me to work from home several days a week. All my kids are now in elementary school, so my wife obtained a job preparing food in the lunch room. She leaves home in the morning with the kids and comes back with them in the afternoon. Sweet. I am thankful. Right now there is a shortage of statistical analysts, specifically in the health care field. Unfortunately, they are sucking up web programmers ill equipped for to do this stuff (like me). My recommendation is to learn SAS or R. Get familiar with open source health care reporting tools like IBIS-PH[^], there is a market for people who can stand up one of these systems, configure it, and back load it. You won't be rich, but it's a fair living. But I hope I get to go back to web programming soon.
