Cool - I've been thinking of starting a blog, probably called thinksIhateAboutMicrosoft.com

I think that with your (obvious) passion and experience, any blog you write would have a large following! I have quite enjoyed doing the BM blog - just need to do some more work to have a reason to update it!

Yes, I definitely do it for social interaction... When I'm not onsite, I also tend to use MSN Messenger for this, however they have it blocked at the site I am at today... Do you use any IM software?

I usually use MSN, but it's on the fritz today.

*grin* I would hope people get a laugh out of it, but I'd actually tell people how to fix bugs in MS stuff, for example, there are .NET methods for reading files that don't work with vista, because under the hood, they request full access, so I'd tell people which ones they should use. other times, I'd just rant about the stupidity of having to remember to install WMP10 every time I start a new PC, so that WPF works.

Oh we do! Even just the latest subject line of "XYZ sucks" causes us to commence giggling... I think the problem you have with CP and MSDN forums, is that because you are an advanced user, you have a tough time finding anyone with suitable experience to help you with the advanced issues you have... You (seem to) stretch the bounds of what the products can achieve, therefore run into issues that us mere mortals don't generally come up against! Come to me when you have an SQL query or database design issue... rofl... When you specialise in business software (as I do), there aren't that many new and exciting traps, they all tend to be traps for young players...

Yes, I agree, generally. However, for WPF, I don't think the questions I asked were that advanced, although they were basically 'why doesn't the bloody media element control work at all ?'. I do think the basic issue is a lot of people asking very basic questions, and the ones that are not basic, get lost pretty quickly.

Just curious, CP seems to me to be pretty slow nowadays, do people feel they post more, the same, or less than in the past ? More to the point, would you use CP for programming stuff as much as in the past ?

I probably don't post as much here as I have in the past. It seems much more hostile somehow and the ultra right wingers are just insufferable since Obama was elected. I never check the lounge anymore and only look in on SB 2.0 once in a while and haven't posted there since the switchover, I think. I check the algorithms and graphics forums and occasionally answer questions or smack the homework cheaters there but they've been pretty quiet for a while. I check the articles daily but most of the new articles are C# and .NET and not relevant to me. The articles I read are usually about things like image processing.

Yeah, I never look at the Soapbox 2.0, it seems like a weird, inbetween sort of a forum to me.

Definitely less. I would never have reached 7k posts in one incarnation at my current rate. I find there are just fewer interesting threads in the Lounge and here.

I rarely post here any more. Anything programming related goes to Stack Overflow nowadays. The programming forums here seem to be full of people wanting homework answers - the quality of both the questions and answers on Stack Overflow is in a different league thanks to their reward system and active moderation. I used to live in this place and was always posting in the old Soapbox. Sensible debate has long since disappeared from here though and it's just one troll after another. In my opinion Code Project is in danger of being overshadowed by the new kid on the block. If the guys behind Stack Overflow put together a system where you can post sample code and applications then Chris would need to start worrying. I also no longer live is a MS-centric world and have no intention of jumping on any of their latest technology bandwagons just because they claim it's the way forward. CP is still primarily a place where developers using MS tools hang out, and as I don't really care about these tools any more, I'm less likely to pop by for a visit. I've had a great time here over the years, engaged in healthy debate, helped a few people out and posted more than my fair share of articles, but I can't see those halcyon days ever returning.

Sadly, I think that's a common tale. A lot of people mention stack overflow. I guess I should check it out, but I have been here for so long, and I worked for CP for a time, so I'd feel like I was cheating on my wife or something...

Just curious, CP seems to me to be pretty slow nowadays, do people feel they post more, the same, or less than in the past ? More to the point, would you use CP for programming stuff as much as in the past ?

I post less compared to last year. It's because same questions are getting repeated, people are posting all junk questions and not responding or down voting when someone tries to help. By the starting of this year, I made a move to LINUX. So doing C++ stuff mostly and found it interesting. This is another reason why posting is less. But I used to read almost all posts in C++, C#, Managed C++/CLI and ASP.NET forums. :)

Yeah, it ceased to be of value to me a long time ago, too. I find that asking questions here, or on MSDN, is basically useless nowadays.

I got a decent answer from you when I posted a programming question in here - maybe we should ask Chris to start an address-concealed programming forum? . . .um no, we probably shouldn't.
