The thread down below jogged my memory into searching the net for information on the pub my family used to own - before it was stolen from us back in 1990 by our family solicitor and his scheming clients :| - The Ley Arms, Kenn, and I found this: http://www.travelpublishing.co.uk/InnsWestCountry/SouthDevon/iwc14856.htm[^] That brings back loads of memories from my childhood in the real countryside - good memories. :) If you look a the drawing you can just make out the big old conker tree on the triangle on the fore-left (in the road infront of the upper bar), and the carpark which is off behind that odd shaped bit of wall on the far right of the main building. you can even see my old bedroom! It is the second window on the second floor from the right hand side of the picture. Before the Underhills (the current owners) took over the previous occupiers cut down "my tree". It was a *massive* old Horse Chesnut that had my first tree house in it, and even though it was protected they still cut it down to build a "function room". And did they get in trouble for it? No! What a f**king waste. :(( I had to give up my pet rabbit, Smokey, when we moved into cheap terraced accomodation in Exeter; I had to leave all of my friends without even a goodbye; I had to move from the beautiful rural countryside into an inner-city slum, leave private schooling, loose my bike, my trains, almost everything 'cause of that corrupt solicitor. What does annoy me is the way they makes it sound like they have made it what it is which is a damned dirty lie! My dad worked his fingers to the bone for five years to get that place where it is today - at the Ley we got through more soda than the rest of the public houses in the South West put together! Tolchards gave us a certificate to proove it! And our head chef, John, was the most human human you could ever wish to meet who has done himself proud helping us after we lost our home and went bankrupt fighting the bloody British Justice System for it. It's taken ten years to get the case to the appeals court and even then there is no chance we will get our home back again. I hope Mr "J" is sued for every penny he's got - lets see him struggle to keep his family off the streets and still keep his dignity. Bitter? Twisted? You don't know the half of by a

Oh my God David, that must feel terrible. Especially the tree and Smokey bit. Here's hoping your solicitor (the previous, corrupt one) gets aptly punished and you get your place back soon. What will he get if it gets proved in the court he cheated, lied, forged, or whatever he did? Cheer up mate, and why don't you visit the place just to refresh some memories, if nothing else? :rose:

This solicitor have his fingers in any dev / web / email pies? Plans could be made, virus's could be written, things could be done... Seriously, that's awful. We had to sell our farm in South Africa when my Dad suffered a stroke (which he's fortunately fully recovered from now) and moved back to England. Every time my husband and I are home in SA and drive passed the area & see the tops of the mountains on the farm, my heart gets tugged in all sorts of painful directions. Perhaps save up, buy the place back? Get it back in the family :rose: The following statement about your geekness is true. The previous statement about your geekness is false. Ouch! That's rough, David. I know how changes in childhood hot-spots can really affect you, I've never seen anything I've been THIS close to. As Rohit suggests, you could go and visit the place. I'd suggest a big burning bag of dog-shite on the front door-step. Not very original but sometimes the classics are best  Incidentally... David Wulff wrote: even though it was protected they still cut it down to build a "function room". And did they get in trouble for it? No! This is something I'm becoming increasingly irritated by lately. It's becoming common practice in this country to ignore protected trees, buildings, sites, etc. on the grounds that once the deed is done, it's too difficult to do anything about it. It's about time the government started fining HEAVILY for things like this before we don't have any old trees or buildings left. It might be too late for that tree but it would make the next pub owners think twice before they cut one down. Now there's something worth a Countryside Alliance march. Paul

Just making so many CPians aware of the story will give him such a karma, his afterlife will sure be a pain. When the sun rises, he will step out of his house, to be attacked by Smokey, the happy solicitor-hunting rabid rabbit, and he find safety only up a massive horse chestnut tree. But as the previous owners are doomed to cut down the tree each day before sunset, with a never-to-be-sharpened hand saw, this safety is only for a day full of fear. And when the sun rises, the day begins again.

Apart from anything else, he will get barred. In practice it means noone in the legal profession will touch him with a bargepole. Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
