Surely there is an animal welfare group close by, possibly PETA, they could be relatives. Get a nose filter, gas mask or something. There is a special place reserved in hell for people who allow animals to starve to death. [edit] Oh, hang on you live in a gun culture, put the dammed gun to use, shoot the poor bloody thing.[/edit]

I live *in* the city. And PETA doesn't give a damned about actual animals.

Do vets not do call-outs? It seems very cruel (perhaps unnecessarily so; I don't know your reasons) to allow an animal to die in such a slow and painful way.

I'll just bet you didn't have a big problem with humans causing Terri Schiavo die in just the same way.

As a matter of fact, I did. There are recorded cases of people coming out of PVS; Terri Schiavo could have done the same. There's always a chance. But either way, it still seems inhumane to let a skunk starve to death in a trap, in pain.

I'm not a bunny-hugger; I care about human beings, not so much about animals. I don't *like* what I'm doing, but I'm not going near that thing.

Then I second the "a**hole" comment. Call your local SPA - you caught it, you have a responsibility for it's welfare, whether you like it or not.

It's strictly take-away, mind you. I'm not going near it! I set a live-trap, hoping to catch one of the raccoons. There is a skunk in the trap ... and I live in the middle of a city of 50,000. I hate the idea of causing an animal to suffer, but it's just going to have to die before I'll go near the trap.

You really are an exceptionally ignorant piece of_shit, aren't you? You set the trap, you_cocksucker, now go release the animal you trapped. I hope to god you spend some time in a cage with an abusive, ignorant_asshole like yourself in charge someday.

Ilion, I've mostly refrained from making any personal attacks, but allowing an animal, yes even a skunk, starve to death because you are too concerned for you sense of smell puts you in the class of truly selfish bastards. As has been said, you set the trap, take responsibility for your actions, deal with the consequences.

Just put a posting on craigslist for a free "cat". It's been my experience that anything you put on there marked free will be gone within 15 minutes. Doesn't seem to matter if it's anything of value or not.

Then I second this response. It isn't a matter of bunny-hugging, it's a matter of respecting animals. Unless you have some allergy to the chemicals that skunks produce, then it's your responsibility to help - you set the trap, and you saw that you caught the wrong animal. It would take only five minutes (I'm guessing) to release the trap, and the only offence would be to your sense of smell.

To trap an animal and then let it starve to death because you are too afraid or lazy or stupid to do something about it is despicable.

Even when I was a partially educated hick living in Ohio, I knew how to treat animals. In fact, I had a pet skunk. All I did was grow up and get away from knuckle draggers like you. Call Animal Control or something since you seem to live in a fucking city, shithead.

Chuck cage complete with skunk into 44 gallon drum of water. No the most humane solution but better than letting it starve.

Critter's probably dead by now, but you didn't think to call the city's animal control why? This is the kind of crap they deal with, and if it's already caged all the better than having to chase it down.

Because the dickless little_fuck wouldn't have been able to get his sadistic jollies if he'd called the authorities. They'd probably have arrested him for animal cruelty.

Even when I was a partially educated hick living in Ohio, I knew how to treat animals. In fact, I had a pet skunk. All I did was grow up and get away from knuckle draggers like you. Call Animal Control or something since you seem to live in a fucking city, shithead.

You measure democracy by the freedom it gives its dissidents, not the freedom it gives its assimilated conformists.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

Do you have any idea what in the hell you're talking about?

I set the trap for raccoons. And even if I *had* let the skunk die slowly, I was not denying anything.
