Maybe I am wrong, but as I read it,It is full of insult to chinese and unfair to chinese. Though it is posted in the soapbox,I really can not accept it as jokes or other. :( this is my signature for forums quoted from shog*9: I can't help but feel, somewhere deep within that withered, bitter, scheming person, there is a small child, frightened, looking a way out.

It was a joke though. A joke based on a common (though not necessarily accurate) perception of chinese (mis)pronunciation of english words, but a joke just the same. The tradition of producing jokes based on appearance, ethnicity, educational background, job or creed (or more often stereotypical perceptions of these) is perhaps one of humanities great shames and yet one of its nobilities, as it allows us to laugh at ourselves and others' perception of us, while dragging our minds through the gutter. In any case, Tomasz' joke is just what The Soapbox is meant for; a dumping of opinion, hearsay, and ranting, devoid of censorship, and not requiring taste or honesty. If The Lounge is, as Chris Maunder calls it, the virtual equivalent of a break room at work, then The Soapbox is a corner pub, where we have a bit more freedom to let ourselves go, but must in turn be ready to accept that others will be doing the same... ...And, of course, accept that we may get slapped up a bit for offending someone. :D Shog9 ------ Crazy lady with the shiny shoes, where are you? It is not a joke. He is saying that Chinese people know how to have fun. When the Chinese guy says, "Surprise", he is just having a surprise party.

Please don't be offended, Zhoujun... it is a harmless joke based on a cultural stereotype, and it's not limited to Chinese. All those raised with an oriental language have difficulty with the r and l sounds in English. It can be learned, and often is, but it is very difficult. We who were raised in the English language have even more difficulty mastering the subtle inflections used in the languages of the Orient - they are far more complex in tonal variation than we are used to hearing. To some, the usual mispronunciation sounds humourous, but they don't mean their laughter to be hurtful or insulting in any way. Word of the day: Rotundacrat

Whilst I found the joke funny, I can understand why you take offence. The joke is based upon stereotypes from a less enlightened time. There have always been jokes at the expense of racial traits which appeal to our baser insticts. Of course to even the score you could always post some of those bad taste Polish jokes. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you here... It is a joke based on the common theme of havbe 3 peopel of different nationalities. Have you ever heard the "Paddy English Man, Paddy Scottish Man, Paddy Irish man" jokes.... They constantly insult either one of these 3 peoples... Don't take it personally. You could have easily changed the Chinese to Irish.. I don't mind. Regards, Brian Dela :-)
