Yes, nowadays he is quick to attack anyone on welfare. Non compassion for the poor seems to be a very right wing Christian trait, one of the many places that they deviate from the example of Christ.

Agreed, dangling the notion of Christ at the end of the proverbial stick for some seems a to be good marketing strategy for their beliefs.
