Voting cards

so, there's a election on here this weekend. I just got a 'how to vote' card in the mail. Voting here is compulsory, so lots of people ( I suspect the majority ) vote only to avoid a fine. The voting card has six boxes, and you need to number them. To vote in the manner preferred by the party that is in power right now, just put 1 through 6 in the boxes, in numerical order. Now, does that not seem corrupt to anyone here ? They are quite terrified that the Greens will hold the balance of power, which seems very likely to me.

It is a supposed random selection up here... Have they introducted optional preferential down there yet? Up here they have... you can order all of them, or only some of them... if you don't put your preferences in, they don't get passed to anyone...

I believe here you have to put a minimum number of numbers in boxes, then you can keep going as far as you want after that. I am certain of one thing, Greens will be last on everyone elses lists, everyone is scared they will be holding the balance of power.

We've a first past the post system in the UK, so you just put an 'X' against the candidate (not the party) you want/ least despise. They are talking about introducing a similar vote re-distribution style system (but without mandatory voting) here so what you are saying is interesting. I didn't consider the box order (it's currently alphabetical if memory serves), but it does seem what you describe is potential abuse, especially in conjunction with mandatory voting.
Dalek Dave: There are many words that some find offensive, Homosexuality, Alcoholism, Religion, Visual Basic, Manchester United, Butter. Pete o'Hanlon: If it wasn't insulting tools, I'd say you were dumber than a bag of spanners.

I prefer the current voting system we have too, for exactly the reasons you outlined. There is a very real danger that the BNP could hold sway in under the re-distributed system. I also like the fact I have a local MP, responsible for my area and from my area. The change is being looked at as voting rates are too low and the've applied the politician syllogilism: Something must be done (too few votes), this (changing the voting system) is something therefore we must do this. They want to tinker with the voting system, whereas the real problem is a mixture of the politicians/political parties and the fact that voting actually seems to change little and the government can seemingly just ignore what the people want.
