German tourist arrives at a French airport's visa check. As he fills out the entry form, the immigration officer asks him: -Occupation? The German promptly replies: -No, no, just visiting!

Sorry, I don't get it. When travelling between Germany and France you don't need any visa, because they are both part of the Schengen Agreement. Hm, maybe this happened before 1985? And yes, I know, yours was a joke. :)

You still have to go through passport control! I fly to the US and do not need a visa, but I am still asked 'Purpose of Visit'.

Yeah, but the US are not part of Schengen. When flying from Germany to France or vice versa, I never was asked about the purpose of my visit. Of course I had to show my ID card, but that's just normal airport security. I also have to show it at a german airport as soon as I want to enter the departure area, regardless of which country I want to travel to. When crossing borders on the ground (i.e. car, train...) between countries that are members of the Schengen Agreement, I don't have to show passport or ID at all. Anyway, I didn't want to start a discussion about security controls when travelling to and fro, I just wanted to bust Deyan's joke :)

never ruin a good joke with logic.
Well, that was the point, since it's a cliché that the Germans are humorless, taking everything literal in sense and destroying jokes with logic ;) .

Oh I get. SOrry, still low on caffeine. I told this to my wife (German ancestry) once and got hit... How can you test to see if someone is German easily? Hand them an assault rifle, if the start marching towards Paris by habit, they are German.
